The TILO SA (Treni Regionali Ti cino Lo mbardia) was a subsidiary of 2004 , SBB and Trenitalia based in the Swiss Chiasso founded. In 2011 Trenord took over the shares in Trenitalia and the headquarters were relocated to Bellinzona . TILO operates all of the Ticino S-Bahn lines that run across borders from Ticino to Lombardy .
In 2007, TILO carried around 5.4 million passengers. The Swiss line sections belong to the Ticino and Misox "Arcobaleno" fare network.
history
Until December 2008, TILO operated regional traffic between Chiasso and Milan as well as the S9 and S11 of the Milan S-Bahn , which are now served by Trenitalia .
New line to Varese
The new Mendrisio - Varese line began operating on January 7, 2018, and the connection from Switzerland to Milan-Malpensa Airport went into operation on June 18, 2018 . Today's S40 and S50 S-Bahn lines are operated on this route. The Mendrisio – Stabio section on Swiss territory was inaugurated on November 26, 2014.

The S 50 and S 10 run between Bellinzona and Mendrisio according to the wing train concept and are separated and reunited in Mendriso.

Accidents
- On February 5, 2019 at Airolo, on the mountain route in front of the south portal of the Gotthard tunnel , two railway workers were caught by a TILO composition while the route was being maintained . One died at the scene of the accident, the other was admitted to hospital seriously injured.
Rolling stock
The rolling stock is rented from the parent companies as a complete package with maintenance by the owner. The vehicles are given a specific address and special paintwork. After the rental, the vehicles will be returned.
