action

The forest man steps in front of his house and says that he knows both good and bad people and then reports what happened to three brothers: Once upon a time there was a tailor who had three sons. He had a very special love for his goat , which was more important to him than his children. Because she had a cold, he even put her in bed, which aroused the displeasure of his customers. He also included his sons in the care of the animal, whose welfare was his focus. When Hans, the eldest son, came back from grazing with the goat, she replied to the tailor's question whether she was full: "What should I be fed up with, I just jumped over Gräbelein and didn't find a single leaf." Hans contradicted and told him Father, that the goat was lying, she would have said to him: "I'm so full, I don't like leaves, mow." The tailor, however, was angry and didn't believe Hans and sent him away, he should shear where the pepper is grows. Disappointed, the boy, completely penniless, ran deeper and deeper into the dark forest. He came to a house and introduced himself to the forest man as Hans in the red cap. He had learned nothing, the father had said he was too stupid to become a tailor. The forest man asked Hans what he would like to become and when he said he was a carpenter , he taught him this craft in the following years. Hans was very clever and became a good carpenter. Only sometimes, when he played the flute, did he get sad and think of his father, who was so unjust, and of his brothers, Michel with the green cap and Klaus with the blue cap, and the lying goat.

The goat did exactly the same with Michel, which led to the fact that the tailor also angrily chased away his second son. In the meantime, Hans was ready to say goodbye to the forest man, who gave him a “little table” as a goodbye, a so-called “little table deck you”, which was filled with the most delicious dishes on request. When he got hungry on the way, he tried his present right away and the table filled up with plenty of food and drink. Michel, on the other hand, chased away by his father, was very hungry. As he was sitting by the river and playing his harmonica , the forest man approached him and told him that he would like to become a miller . And so it happened. When Michel had finished his studies, he received a donkey from the forest man as a goodbye. The forest man told him that this was a very special donkey, because if he shouted: “Donkey or gold donkey stretch yourself”, the animal would drop gold pieces . Michel was curious and wanted to know whether the forest man hadn't promised him too much. He spread his handkerchief and actually the animal reacted to the magic words.

In the meantime, Hans stopped in a village tavern and told frankly what his little table could do and immediately demonstrated it. The landlord and his wife watched speechless, Hans had hardly taken anything from the table when it filled up again. The landlords came up with a plan to swap the table for one that looked almost the same. Not knowing anything bad, Hans moved on the next day with the wrong little table. Shortly afterwards his brother Michel arrived at the inn with his donkey. He too immediately told us that his donkey was a very special animal. The innkeepers concluded that there was a connection between the boy with the red cap and the boy with the green cap, and then through the keyhole they saw the donkey spitting gold. Then they exchanged their old donkey for the gold donkey and Michel, unsuspecting, went away with the wrong donkey. The innkeepers rubbed their hands in excited excitement in anticipation of the coming financial blessing.

Klaus, the youngest son of the tailor, was accused of lying by his father and ran away on his own to look for his brothers. Although he played neither the flute nor the harmonica, he could whistle very well . This is how he got to the forest man, where he learned the craft of a turner .

In the meantime the tailor made the experience that it was not his sons but the goat who had lied and now he sent them away. When the time came for Klaus to say goodbye to the forest man, he handed him a stick and said at the boy's puzzled look that it was a very special stick. If he said to him: "Stick out of the bag", then he would drive out quickly and among the people that they would have to feel it for a long time. Only when he says: "Stick in the sack" does the stick go back there. He also tells Klaus what he gave his brothers and that they weren't paying attention, which is why the presents were taken away from them. Klaus also comes to the aforementioned inn and sees through the window how the innkeepers are talking to the “Tischlein deck dich” (little table) and a light goes on to him immediately. Klaus asks about his brothers with the red cap and the green cap. However, the innkeepers claim that they know nothing. Of course, they have not lost sight of the fact that Klaus carries a mysterious sack with him, in which, as he said, something is good for body and mind. The innkeepers believe that this is a special medicine that ensures that you don't get sick. So when the landlord thinks the boy is asleep, he sneaks into his room. When he is tampering with the bag, Klaus calls: "Stick out of the bag" and the landlord is doing really badly. Klaus demands the surrender of the table and the gold donkey. When the landlady wants to refuse to hand them over, the stick becomes active with her too.

Just as the tailor bitterly regrets again and again what a great injustice he has done his sons, Hans and Michel suddenly stand in the door and talk about their very special gifts. The father runs excitedly through the village and invites everyone to admire the gifts from his sons. But the table is not set, nor does the donkey spew gold pieces. This time the father defends his sons. And then Klaus comes out of the sack with the right little table and the gold donkey and his stick. And this time the miracles work and the goat that set everything in motion is back again.

criticism

The lexicon of the international film took into account the richness of detail and the splendor of colors of the film adaptation and judged: "A fairy tale film based on the fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm, staged with great attention to detail, which today is more appealing due to its blaze of color than its somewhat homely pedagogy."

The film magazine Cinema also confirmed that the film was "[e] twas old-fashioned".
