Tobias Pock
Tobias Pock (* 1609 in Konstanz ; † June 12, 1683 in Vienna ; also Tobias Pockh , Tobias Bock ) was a German painter .
Life
Tobias Pock came from a Swabian family of artists; his father was a master builder at the Konstanz Minster . He trained as a painter in southern Germany and went on study trips to Italy. He became an important painter of the Austrian early Baroque and worked in Vienna and the surrounding area from 1639.
One of Pock's most important works is the high altar of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna (1640/47), which he created together with his brother Johann Jacob Pock . Tobias Pock later created the altarpiece of the Peter and Paul altar for the cathedral, which was erected by the stonemasons' guild in 1677 and which has been preserved under the organ base as the second oldest baroque altar in the cathedral .
The altarpieces in the Dominican Church in Vienna show the adoration of St. Dominic and Francis and the presentation of the rosary.
Further works were in the Schotten- und Servitenkirche in Vienna, the basilica "Mariae Himmelfahrt" in St. Pölten (Lower Austria) (1658), Mariazell (Styria) as well as the frescoes in the Wiener Schottenkirche in Vienna (almost completely destroyed). There are also works in the St. Mary's pilgrimage site Svatý Kopeček ("Heiligenberg") with the "Church of the Visitation of Mary" and in the Aggsbach-Dorf parish church of the former Aggsbach Charterhouse (1673). His works show the style of the contemporary painters of the Augsburg and Munich Schools, supplemented by ideas from northern Italy and Flanders.
The draft of the Emperor Ferdinand III. Marian column donated in 1645 can be proven to be Tobias Pock, but the execution was carried out under his brother Johann Jacob.
In the northern Italian town of Rovereto , in a side chapel of the Archparish of San Marco, the altarpiece Martyrdom of St. Dorothea , which was originally intended for the monastery church of the later disbanded Dorotheerkloster in Vienna.
