Tom Clancy's The Division 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tom Clancy's The Division 2 is the second part of the loot shooter series from Ubisoft , which was developed by Massive Entertainment . It is the sequel to Tom Clancy's The Division (2016). The game was released on March 15, 2019 for Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.

It has also been available for Google Stadia since March 17, 2020 . Google Stadia allows cross-play with PC players.

It is a third-person shooter with a progression system (officially referred to and marketed by Ubisoft as " RPG adaptations"), which is set in an open world and whose elementary game mechanics are geared towards the capture of better weapons and equipment ( loot ) .

action

The time of the fictional plot of Tom Clancy's The Division 2 is towards the end of the 2010s, about half a year after the outbreak of a smallpox pandemic , the so-called "green poison" or the "dollar flu" in New York, in the early summer of the following year settled. The center of Washington, DC or its suburbs as well as the surrounding grassland (both playable in the so-called expedition missions of the DLC expansion episodes) serve as the main location of the game action .

The chaos caused by the pandemic, the lack of infrastructure and the largely still prevalent anomie led to the formation of different groups in Washington DC that are now fighting for supremacy in the city.

The division's agents, led by Manny Ortega, will fight these enemy factions throughout the game, with the task of liberating the city and re-establishing the Strategic Homeland Division's information network (SHD network). They are slightly supported by the still existing military, medical and executive forces, which are grouped together in the so-called Joint Task Force (JTF). As if the widespread terrorism and poor infrastructure weren't enough, the President of the United States , Andrew Ellis, is believed to be missing or killed on the field. His plane, Air Force One , crashed near Capitol Hill .

Opposing factions

Hyenas

The hyenas (hyenas) are a more or less loose grouping of anarchists , gang members and criminals who make personal profit from the resulting chaos and who seem to enjoy torturing the residents of DC.

Outcasts

The outcasts are formed from fanatical survivors of the pandemic and people who have fled quarantine zones. They want revenge on supposedly those who they believe are responsible for their imprisonment and possible infection. They are led by Emelline Shaw, an asymptomatic carrier of the virus.

True Sons

True Sons refers to the technically well-equipped and armed force of former military personnel and defected JTF forces, which, under the leadership of Colonel Antwon Ridgeway, is of the opinion that they are the only possible force that can be brought back through brutal action Can ensure peace and order.

Further course of the story or conspiracy

Manny Ortega and Alani Kelso (an NPC division agent) learn that an antidote to the "green poison" can be found somewhere in town and that President Ellis survived the Air Force One crash but is now being held prisoner. In the course of the game, the agent finally discovers Ellis and saves him from the custody of the Hyenas.

President Ellis affirms that broad spectrum antiviral antibiotics exist to cure not just "green poison" but all viral infections. However, he can only access them with a special briefcase currently stored in the True Sons' heavily fortified base in the United States Capitol. After the agent repairs the SHD network and reconnects the division's agents across the country, Ellis vows to restore the United States, no matter what.

Now that the opposing factions have been pushed back by the division's operations, they withdraw into so-called fortresses. With the help of civilian militias and the JTF, the agent attacks these fortresses and eliminates the leadership of most factions. Only the leader of the outcasts, Emelline Shaw, who disappears and survives during the attack on her fortress on Roosevelt Island.

While the agent is still celebrating victory over the enemy with the JTF, forces from the private military company "Black Tusk" penetrate Washington DC and take over parts of the city - they form the so-called invasion missions. At the same time as the Black Tusk arrives, President Ellis disappears with his briefcase and has to be found by the agent. During the search, the agent learns that the Washington DC factions have been supplied with weapons by the Black Tusk, presumably to keep the unstable situation up longer. Ellis is said to have also cooperated with the Black Tusk and, through the secret service, ordered the murder of his predecessor, President Mendez, who was previously described as a suicide victim. With Ellis' help, the Black Tusk get antiviral agents, which they want to use the tidal basin to get out of the city and Washington, DC with a rocket attack to rubble and ashes.

Black Tusk

In the course of the game story you meet highly specialized forces of the Black Tusk (black tusk) equipped with the most modern technical and military means. They have a functioning infrastructure as well as coveted fuels so that their soldiers can be brought to the deployment sites by helicopter, for example.

Their equipment includes combat robot dogs and mini tanks, which, depending on the game experience, appear as challenging opponents.

development

On March 9, 2018, the second year after the release of Tom Clancy's The Division , rumors of a sequel to the game with the release of the branding of the second part were confirmed. They wanted to leave the programming in the hands of those companies that were also involved in the development of the first part and thus learn from the mistakes.

Above all, this included a more intensive gaming experience right from the start, right through to a well-thought-out endgame, i.e. game tasks beyond the regular story mode. The first in-game excerpts from the game were presented at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018 in June 2018 and aroused high expectations among fans. Almost eight months later, on February 7, 2019, the private beta phase of the game was started and feedback on graphics and performance was obtained over a period of four days.

In order to stand out from The Division , in terms of a further development, the developers paid great attention to great attention to detail with regard to the location of the action as well as the physics of the game and, for example, the sound of the weapons.

Game content

Open world game

The Open World game mechanics already known from the first part were intensified for the second part and better anchored in the game. The Open World covers several districts of Washington DC, including a. Downtown, Capitol Hill and The Mall, as well as several attractions such as the Lincoln Memorial.

These districts including control points are held or fought over by different factions and can be alerted in the course of the game by carrying out different actions, increased in difficulty and ultimately conquered. In order to raise the alarm levels of the checkpoints, for example, propaganda broadcasts of the faction claiming the territory must be stopped, hostages saved from being shot or intervening in territorial battles.

Finding and collecting resources and supplies is an important part of the game in order to be able to complete various quest tasks or to improve your own equipment.

The replenishment in the form of water, food and parts is more or less well distributed in bags and boxes over the entire open world. However, some places host larger amounts of it and these are also shown on the map. This replenishment is needed by the control point officers to supply their control points in order to better equip them against enemy attacks.

Resources such as steel , titanium , ceramics , polycarbonate or carbon fiber are also distributed in the open world, but depending on the faction, they can also be found increasingly in the respective stakes. Resources are mainly used for upgrading, the so-called recalibration of the equipment.

The open world of The Division 2 offers a high density of possible game activities that keep the game fun going well beyond the story mode. A reward system in the form of patches that the agent can wear on his upper arm are just as much a part of it as backpack trophies that can be displayed as a sign that the game content has been completed.

After successfully completing the story mode after around 40 hours of game time, a number of endgame activities are available.

Black Tusk Invasion Missions

The weekly playable tasks include the Black Tusk invasion missions, which alternate in the same three-week sequence. Here, all known main missions are marked as invasion missions and instead of the usual factions you meet the Black Tusk. If you have completed the necessary invasion missions, including a deployment to a fortress, this entitles the agent to deploy to the Tidal Basin.

Tidal Basin

Within the invasion missions, the Tidal Basin mission represents the conclusion of the weekly mission tasks of the Black Tusk Invasion. The evacuation of antivirals by the Black Tusk must be prevented and a missile attack on Washington DC must be thwarted. By recovering the antivirals, the agent should enable the basis for the production of a remedy.

Secret missions

For owners of the "Year One - Pass" (a download subscription, available as DLC for an additional charge) there are a total of five secret missions available. These are shown with a blue radius on the Washington DC map. On the one hand, the player has the task of finding a hidden entrance and within the corresponding mission to fight opponents, on the other hand, there is the possibility of finding hidden backpack trophies.

Hunter missions

At different, unmarked places in the open world , the so-called "hunters" can be called by certain actions such as emojis or shots on window panes in a certain order. Each of these specially equipped and with a higher AI equipped NPC, if killed, drops one of twelve hunter masks as loot in addition to equipment and weapons. However, these named masks only have a purely optical character.

In addition to equipment and weapons, the player also has the option of receiving one of the so-called ivory keys when defeating a hunter. Eight of them have to be captured, which can then open a gun case in the base of operations.

Dark Zones

After some areas of the city in Washington DC had completely slipped out of control by the JTF and the division, these three areas were cordoned off and designated as Dark Zones. Those areas where opposing factions fight against each other and the agent has the opportunity to meet other agents in the game in a PvP mode. In the Dark Zones, the agent has the opportunity to gain valuable booty through various activities, but this must be removed from the double room using a helicopter. Furthermore, the agent can break away from the division and renegade in order to kill other agents and loot their previously collected material. Using a sophisticated apostasy protocol, the agent can then advance to the status of manhunt, end it by visiting a special location in the game and also receive valuable rewards.

Raids

For the first time in the story of Tom Clancy's The Division , the player has the opportunity to join a raid , i.e. a large-scale player offensive against a number of boss opponents.

Raid 1: Dark Hours

The first raid after the Tidal Basin invasion mission has been available since May 16, 2019. The player is brought from the base of operations, the White House, by helicopter to the location, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport , and has to complete a four-stage mission there. The prerequisites for successfully completing the most difficult challenge of the game is an optimally coordinated and equipped team with a high level of communication.

DLC - expansion episodes

Title updates in the form of DLC's have been planned to ensure increased gaming fun. These include additional missions as well as exotic equipment or weapons.

Episode 1: Washington's Suburbs: Expeditions

On July 30, 2019, the first title update, "Episode 1 - Washington's Suburbs: Expeditions" was released as DLC. It includes two new main missions and an expedition section that takes the player to Kenly College, where a number of tasks must be completed in order to acquire an exotic weapon. During the main missions you will meet the leader of the outcasts, Emelline Shaw, whose story will be told further.

Episode 2: Pentagon: The Last Bulwark

On October 22nd, 2019 the second title update "Episode 2 - Pentagon: The Last Bulwark" took place as DLC. In this additional game content, the Black Tusk play a major role and the agent penetrates the rooms of the Pentagon to secure a bioreactor , which is supposed to make it possible to reproduce the antivirals seized during the Tidal Basin operation. Furthermore, the agent has to fight his way through the DARPA laboratories, as the Black Tusk are already removing the bioreactor from the Cold War era through abandoned escape tunnels . With the help of the now recovered bioreactor, the production of a medicinal product should be possible.

Episode 3: Coney Island: The Hunt

The third title update was released on February 12, 2020 (for Year 1 Pass holders) and takes the agent back to Coney Island in New York. Two missions, baseball stadium and Coney Island amusement park, await agents there . The rogue agent and cause of the pandemic, Aaron Keener, is holding Russian virologist Vitaly Tchernenko prisoner there in order to abuse him for further research purposes. The aim of the missions is the search for Keener and the liberation of Tchernenko.

Expansion The Warlords of New York

On March 3, 2020, the expansion The Warlords of New York was released, with the level cap raised to 40. The player returns to New York, which is now summery, where the first part of The Division was already playing. There four warlords must be eliminated, which are rogue agents of the division. All four warlords are linked to Aaron Keener, the most notorious renegade.

Trivia

  • The team that was the first team to successfully complete the Raid Dark Hours received the honor of a virtual memorial as a team photo including gamertags in the east wing of the White House.
  • In the so-called owl puzzle , while the mission on Roosevelt Island is being conducted as an invasion mission, you have to find seven owl statues in the mission area and light them in the correct order.
  • In August 2018, one of the game's announcement trailers showed a scene in which a police vehicle was seen with the door half open. As a result, the police lettering on its side, similar to an optical illusion, could be read as "POLCE" and a viral hype arose immediately. In February 2019, the creative director of the game, Julian Gerighty, joked in a Twitter posting in response to a fan request that this car could be found in a future update. In one of the following patches, this vehicle was actually imported, but required a reminder on August 21, 2019 to the game community with a reference to a reward in order to actually start the search. A few hours later the vehicle was discovered by a German player and reported by retweet .

After intervening in game mechanics and further developing game content beyond the story was already necessary during the development of The Division in order to keep the game community happy, the developers wanted to get off to a clean start with the second part of the series.

However, this went wrong because after the end of the beta phase, i.e. at the official release, the game still had to struggle with technical errors such as sound and graphics problems.

Through repeated patches, at least the technical problems could be resolved in the first months after the release - the correction of the balancing problems, for example unrealistically high weapon damage to a certain weapon compared to another, continued. The maintenance windows were used again for patches and bug fixing.

As already several times with the further development of The Division , a so-called elite task force , i.e. a group of volunteer players who should express the wishes of the gaming community in the further development , should now be deployed again at the beginning of September 2019 .
