Thomas Segun Ilube , CBE , (born July 1963 in Richmond, London , England ) is a British entrepreneur , cybersecurity expert , girls' education activist and philanthropist . He was number one on the 2017 Powerlist , an annual listing of the 100 most powerful African or Afro-Caribbean people in the United Kingdom .

Education and professional career

Ilube was born in Great Britain to a Nigerian father and an English mother. At the age of seven, he moved with his family to Kampala ( Uganda ), where his father as a television engineer for the BBC worked. He later attended high school in the UK and Edo College in Benin City , Nigeria . There he obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Benin and then a master's degree in business administration from Cass Business School in London .

In 2005, he co-founded Garlik , an online identity company that was sold to global information services provider Experian in 2011 . Ilube was Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the former Internet bank Egg . In 2011 he founded the Hammersmith Academy , a state co-educational secondary school for 11-18 year olds in Hammersmith , London , specializing in creative and digital media and information technology and "one of the most innovative technology schools in the UK". During his time as managing director for hypermarkets at CallCredit Information Group , he founded the credit information service Noodle . Ilube has been a non-executive director on the BBC's Board of Directors since April 2017 . In 2018 he was elected an Advisory Fellow at St Anne's College , Oxford . He is the founder and CEO of Crossword Cyber Security plc , which in December 2018 exchange segment Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange London Stock Exchange has been approved.

Social Commitment

Ilube is chairman and founder of the African Gifted Foundation , a UK charity focused on science and technology in Africa that launched the African Science Academy (ASA) in 2016 , Africa's first girls-only academy for science and maths Ghanaian capital Accra . He was chairman of the Ada. National College for Digital Skills , founded in 2016 as the first completely new continuing education college in the UK in 23 years. Ilube provided the prizes for the Nommo Awards for African science fiction and speculative fiction four years in advance .

Awards and honors

The University of Wolverhampton awarded Ilube an honorary doctorate in 2005 . In 2014 he was the first recipient of the City Livery Club's "Root and Branch" anniversary award , presented by Princess Anne . In October 2016, Ilube was named the UK's Most Influential Black Person after topping the annual list of the 100 Most Powerful People in Britain with an African or Afro-Caribbean Background. New African magazine listed Ilube as one of the most influential people in Africa in 2017. In the same year he was honored with the Beacon Award for Innovation in Philanthropy . For contributions to technology and philanthropy, Ilube was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and an honorary doctorate from the City, University of London , in the 2018 annual Birthday Honors .
