Tom Purdom
Thomas Edward Purdom (born April 19, 1936 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American science fiction writer.
Life
Purdom is the son of Orlando Jackson Purdom and Inez Antoninette Purdom, née Tigna. As the son of a Marine, he moved relatively frequently and grew up predominantly in West Haven , Connecticut, San Diego , California, Tampa , Florida and the Bainbridge Naval Training Center in Maryland . In 1954 he moved from home and has lived in Philadelphia ever since .
From 1954 to 1968 Purdom worked as an office worker, mostly for United Airlines , and wrote on the side. From 1968 to 1970 he was an editor and writer at the University of Pennsylvania , after which he taught English at Temple University in Philadelphia until 1971 . From 1963 he worked part-time. In addition to his work as an SF writer, he wrote a script for a science film, worked as a technical and scientific writer in various fields and as a music critic for several local Philadelphia magazines.
In 1957, a first short story, Grieve for a Man, appeared in the SF magazine Fantastic Universe . As a result, Purdom's short stories appeared in magazines such as Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine , Analog , The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction , Galaxy , Amazing and in various anthologies . In 1964 his debut novel I Want the Stars was published , followed by four other novels, including The Barons of Behavior (1972), translated into German as Die Psychospione . This novel also follows the pattern used several times by Purdom, in which the protagonist fights against a tyranny and ultimately wins. Here the tyranny of a future America is being exercised by an alliance of science, technology and politics which, in the name of order, undertakes to suppress any expression of freedom and creativity.
Purdom has been married to Sara Jeanne Wescoat since 1960, with whom he has a son (born 1964). Sara Purdom died in 2006.
