Tom Tellez

Tom Tellez (* 17th October 1933 in Los Angeles ) is a former American track and field - coach and was coach of the athletics team of the University of Houston .

Tellez is one of the most successful coaches in track and field history. He trained u. a. Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell . In 1980 and 1984 he was in charge of the US Olympic team.

Tellez was born in Los Angeles in 1933. His mother was from Mexico and his father from Texas. The family moved to Montebello , where Tellez grew up with his siblings and attended public schools. He began playing football and athletics in high school and played on the football team at Fullerton Junior College for two years . He went to Whittier College on a partial scholarship . There he trained football under George Allen, who later became a very successful coach in the National Football League and United States Football League. At that time Tellez made the decision not to pursue a playing career, but to become a coach. After Tellez received his degrees in biology and physical education, he signed a contract as an assistant coach at Buena Vista High School. Instead, however, he was drafted into the US Army in 1956 and after basic training assigned to the 85th Infantry Division, which was stationed in Bremerhaven . His wife Kay H. Brownsberger, whom he had met at Whittier College and who later worked as a music teacher, accompanied him to Germany. During his two-year service in the military, Tellez made his first experiences as a sports coach.

Back in the United States, Tellez took the position as an assistant coach at Buena Vista High School. In 1961 he became a coach at Fullerton Junior College. He began to study biomechanics intensively and obtained a master's degree from Chapman College in 1962. From 1968 he was an assistant coach at the University of California , where he was last assistant to Dick Vermeil . In 1976 he started working as a head coach at the University of Houston . In 1979, Carl Lewis came to campus and Tellez took over his training in the years that followed. He coached other successful American athletes, including six of the seven sprinters who won Olympic gold between 1984 and 1996. In 1980 and 1984 he was assistant coach of the US Olympic team, which he trained in the disciplines of throwing and jumping. In 1991 he was the head coach of the national team at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo .

After 22 years, Tellez left the University of Houston and has since worked as a personal coach for individual athletes. He is widowed and has three grown children.
