Anthony "Tony" Allen (born January 11, 1982 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2004 to 2018 , most of it with the Boston Celtics and the Memphis Grizzlies . Allen was considered one of the best defenders in his position and was selected several times for the NBA All-Defensive Team .

Career

High school & college

Allen was an outstanding player at Crane High School in Chicago . In Crane he played together with the current Detroit Pistons player Will Bynum . In his freshman college year (2000-2001) he played for Butler County College in El Dorado, Kansas , where he averaged 16.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 steals . This earned him the Jayhawk West Conference Freshman of the Year award . During his sophomore year (2001-2002) at Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Illinois , he led his team to a 32-6 year-end result and fourth place in the NJCAA championships.

For his last two years of college (2002-2004) Allen moved to Oklahoma State University . In his senior year, he was named Big 12 Player of the Year after averaging 16 points and leading his team to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . Allen became the first player in Oklahoma State University's history to score 1,000 points in just two seasons.

Allen was voted 25th in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics . In his rookie season, he averaged 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game and had the third highest number of steals per 48 minutes , with a value of 2.89. He was selected to take part in the Rookie Challenge .

Charge of assault

During the 2005 off season, Allen was charged with aggravated assault. During an argument at a Chicago restaurant , a 29-year-old man pulled a gun and shot, but did not kill anyone. Despite being unrelated to the shooting, Allen was charged with breaking a man's left eye socket and spent two nights in jail. Because of this incident and a serious right knee injury sustained as a result of the altercation, he missed most of the first half of the 2005-06 season . On April 24, 2007, he was acquitted by a Chicago court.

Knee injury

In the final minutes of the Boston Celtics versus Indiana Pacers game on January 10, 2007, Allen suffered a knee injury from an awkward landing after a dunk attempt . He tore his cruciate ligament and one collateral ligament . Allen underwent successful cruciate ligament surgery on January 13, but spent the rest of the season on the bench. Nine months later he was ready to play again, albeit not at full strength, which means a quick recovery for such a serious injury.

2008-09

On July 23, 2008, Allen renewed his contract with Boston by two years for five million dollars.

Memphis grizzlies

In July 2010, Allen signed a 3-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies . He later said of his final season at Boston that he felt 'overshadowed' by veterans such as Paul Pierce and Ray Allen . His first return to Boston was on March 23, 2011. Allen was elected to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team for his defensive service in 2011, 2016 and 2017 . In 2012, 2013 and 2015 he was appointed to the NBA All-Defensive First Team .
