Tony Wilson (music manager)
Anthony "Tony" Wilson (* 20th February 1950 in Salford in the county of Lancashire (now Greater Manchester ), England ; † 10. August 2007 in Manchester ) was a British music manager , nightclub operators and television journalist , which is a key factor in the development of Manchester's music scene was from the mid 1970s .
Life and creativity
After seeing the Sex Pistols at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976 , he invited the band to appear on his So It Goes show on local Granada TV . Wilson later founded the Factory Records label , which shortly afterwards became a driving force in the development of post-punk and new wave thanks to artists such as Joy Division , New Order , James , the Happy Mondays and producer Martin Hannett . Around the same time, he opened the Fac 51 Haçienda nightclub , which became the epicenter of the rave and Madchester scene in the late 1980s / early 1990s .
The Haçienda was closed in the summer of 1997 due to an out of control drug problem . Factory Records filed for bankruptcy around the same time . Wilson didn't make a fortune with his label or the nightclub. Legendary is the fact that Factory Records initially lost around £ 0.20 with each copy sold due to the intricate cover design of New Order's single Blue Monday , although the single was the best-selling in 12 "format until 1988.
Tony Wilson has been fighting kidney cancer since 2006 . He died on August 10, 2007 at the age of 57 after a heart attack .
