action

Paris in the year 1830. In the midst of the turmoil of the revolution , Georges-Eugène Haussmann is planning to redesign Paris with the shopping mall Galeries Haussmann, which in future might be called Galeries Lafayette after all . The owner of a fashion salon, Van Buck, is also thinking about redesigning his shop. However, long and short versions of his name do not make a good sound that could be written on a shop sign.

Although Van Buck has become wealthy through his prosperous business, he does not want the Baroness de Mantes' large order worth 3000 francs to be paid for in cash. He goes to see her to get her to pay an installment in advance, and learns that the baroness has done the shopping to prepare a ball. His goal is to marry off their daughter Cécile - if necessary against her will. Van Buck thinks about business and realizes that adding a “DM” to his initials would make the shop sign sound well. It is true that he does not think of getting married himself; he wants to hand over his business to his nephew Valentin, even if he doesn't know where he is. He gets into business with the baroness and contributes further cash benefits to the ball in addition to the order already placed. In return, the Baroness accepts Valentin as her daughter's future husband, if she falls in love with him.

Van Buck finds Valentin in a sérail, where he has fun with women and gets into debt. He pays the considerable sums of money that Valentin owes various people in Paris. Valentin flatly refuses to marry, but he is ready to make a bet. He bets 10,000 francs that he will have seduced Cécile by midnight the next day, a kiss being sufficient proof. If he manages it, he doesn't have to get married and he gets the money. His only condition is that he doesn't have to face her as Van Buck's nephew. Van Buck agrees. Valentin appears the next day at the de Mantes' estate. He faked a carriage accident and apparently passed out by the driver to the family estate. Here he “wakes up” briefly to introduce himself to the baroness as Prince Frédéric, only to pass out again immediately. He is brought to a room and Cécile takes care of him. Valentin thinks she has an easy time of it, but she repeatedly eludes him. When he enters her room during the night and lies down with her in bed, she chases him away with a sword.

The next day, Cécile has disappeared; Valentin can track her down at a fair. She is stubborn and doesn't want to know anything about him. She wins the shell game and can also convince when shooting. However, when he frees her from the hands of the cone players who want the money they have lost, she is grateful to him. However, he does not receive the kiss he needs to win the bet. She makes it clear to him that she will only do his favor once she can see that he appreciates it. A relationship without love is unthinkable for her. Valentin leaves for Paris frustrated, but makes an appointment with her at 9 p.m. in the park of the property. He is sure that he can win his bet just hours before the end of the ultimatum; However, during all the game he has imperceptibly fallen in love with Cécile. Van Buck makes this clear to him, but Valentin doesn't want to know anything about love and marriage. While he is riding to the arranged meeting with Cécile, Van Buck visits the baroness to save Cécile's honor. She is already on her way to the park, but is warned by her maid and climbs over her window to her room, in front of which the baroness is already waiting. Because she has twigs in her hair, Van Buck realizes that she was in the park. He now confesses to the baroness that Valentin is his nephew. He reveals the whole deal between Van Buck and the baroness, but swears to Cécile that his feelings for her were real. The baroness throws him out and Valentin leaves, but makes an appointment with Cécile at the gate.

Valentin and Van Buck are invited at the gate to the Sérail to welcome the new king, whom they follow. Here they bet with other guests whether Cécile will appear or not. Only with a lot of tricks does he manage to leave her mother's well-secured property. A carriage takes them to the Sérail in Paris. Valentin announces in front of all the guests that he just wanted to have fun with her and seduce her, but Cécile holds on to her love for him until he can no longer maintain his facade. He also confesses his love to her and they both kiss shortly before midnight. The next morning the party goes to the Baroness de Mantes, where the party will continue at the planned ball, even if Cécile already has her husband by her side for life.
