Stages and course of the race

After the start of the tour in the provincial capital San Luis and the expected mass sprint, which the Italian Roberto Ferrari ( Androni Giocattoli ) won, on the second day there was a mountain arrival in Mirador del Portero , which made for a first selection in the overall classification. Ferrari's team-mate José Serpa secured the day's victory from the top group of four . Androni's winning streak continued on the largely flat section that followed: once again Ferrari was unbeatable in the mass sprint.

On the fourth day, a not too long individual time trial was held in San Luis. Movistar professional Xavier Tondo secured the day's victory and also the orange jersey of the leader. Even on the following difficult mountain finish, Tondo was able to keep the leader jersey as seventh of the day behind the successful breakers around the Argentine stage winner Leandro Messineo . The sixth stage, with two difficult climbs, formed the king's stage of the race and with over 190 kilometers it was also the longest of the tour. Due to a fall 15 kilometers from the finish, Tondo had to give up his overall lead here to the Chilean Marco Arriagada and lost all chances of victory. Arriagada crossed the finish line 1:29 minutes behind the Colombian solo winner Miguel Ángel Rubiano from the small Italian team D'Angelo & Antenucci-Nippo . The Tour de San Luis 2011 ended in the capital of the same name in a mass sprint. The Uruguayan Héctor Aguilar won this one.
