Avanto Tram-Train in Thann St-Jacques

The Mulhouse – Vallée de la Thur tram-train connects the city center of Mulhouse with the municipality of Thann in the Thur Valley . The line uses the tracks of line 3 of the Mülhausen tram from the Gare Centrale stop to the Lutterbach Gare stop and then transfers to the tracks of the Lutterbach – Kruth railway line . At a later point in time, the tram-train will continue to Kruth . The commissioning took place on December 12, 2010, at the same time line 3 of the Mulhouse tram went into operation. It is the first "linked" tram-train route France (apart from the from the German Saarbrücken coming Saarbahn in Saargemünd ).

history

Route map

From 1991, discussions took place in Mulhouse about the reintroduction of a public transport system on its own route. In 1997 the Lutterbach – Kruth line was modernized for 30 million euros. The feasibility study for a tram-train on the Lutterbach – Kruth line has been published. On October 11, 2004, the public benefit ( Déclaration d'utilité publique (DUP)) of the project was determined. At the beginning of 2006, the construction work was awarded and the tram-train vehicles were ordered.

Construction work began in 2007, which in 2008 focused on the construction of structures and earthworks for the new tracks. In the same year the Thann-St-Jacques train station was relocated to its new location. The laying of the new tracks and the construction of the overhead line took place in 2009, as did the production of the tram-train vehicles, which were built by Siemens. In 2010, the final construction measures such as the construction of the platforms , the commissioning of the new signaling system and the delivery of the vehicles took place. The first test drive from Lutterbach to Graffenwald took place on June 3, 2010. The test runs on the tram network began on November 23, 2009. Commissioning took place on December 12, 2010.

Infrastructure

The tram-train route is 22 kilometers long. The maximum speed is 100 km / h, the average speed is 29 km / h.

From the main train station to the Stricker roundabout, the Tram-Train uses the tracks of line 2 of the Mulhouse tram. From there, two new tracks were laid to Dornach train station , after which it continues on a single track to Lutterbach train station . This section of the route is also used by line 3, which ends in Lutterbach, for which a sweeping track was created. From Lutterbach, the tram-train uses the Lutterbach – Kruth line to Thann Saint-Jacques, which has been electrified with overhead lines for this purpose .

For the commissioning of the tram-train, among other things, additional crossing possibilities had to be created at three stations. In addition, the tunnel in Thann had to be demolished in order to set up a station at the same location. In addition, a siding had to be created west of the Thann Saint-Jacques train station.

Three bridges had to be rebuilt. The construction of a double-track bridge over Rue du Tunnel and Avenue François-Mitterrand in Mulhouse . In addition, the underpass under the A 36 was expanded and a new single-track bridge was built over the Doller .

The clearance profile under the bridge of Route Nationale 83 between Graffenwald and Cernay is limited in height, so the contact wire height had to be reduced there. The contact line is dead for this purpose. Therefore the pantograph has to be lowered on this section.

Stations

The route has 18 stations.

Two new stations have been created outside of Mulhouse: Vieux-Thann ZI and Thann Center . On the new section, which is shared with Tram 3 of the Mulhouse tram , three new stations have been created: Dornach Gare , Zu Rhein and Musées , near the Cité du train .

Extension to Kruth

Originally, the tram train should have run to Kruth . However, due to funding difficulties, the project was split into two phases. The neighboring communities between Thann and Kruth are demanding the construction of the second phase.

vehicles

Twelve Siemens Avanto articulated railcars are available for operation. They are referred to as U 25500 at SNCF, are 36.678 m long and have five double doors on each side of the vehicle for changing passengers. The vehicles can be used under catenary with 25  kV  / 50  Hz alternating and 750 volts direct voltage . These trains were built in Duppigheim by the Lohr company. The interior and exterior design comes from Peret .

business

Trains run every half hour on weekdays and Saturdays. There is a train every hour on Sundays. On weekdays, TERs condense the timetable in order to make connections to other TERs , including the TER 200 , which runs from Strasbourg to Basel .

The travel time between Vieux-Thann and Porte Jeune is 32 minutes. The TER from Vieux-Thann to Mulhouse train station takes 18 minutes.

In the first year of operation, 18.4% more passengers used the trains (TER and Tram-Train) between Thann and Mulhouse than in the previous year. But the hoped-for relief of road traffic initially failed to materialize. The original goal of doubling the number of passengers should be achieved by the end of 2013.
