The Lutterbach – Kruth railway connects Lutterbach with Kruth via Thann in Alsace .

The route used to have number 32 in the Réseau ferroviaire d'Alsace-Lorraine . The route is used by SNCF trains and the Mulhouse-Vallée de la Thur tram-train .

history

The line is the third railway line opened for passenger traffic in France. The Lutterbach – Thann section was put into operation on September 1, 1839 and was financed by the region's industry. The Thann– Wesserling section was opened on November 25, 1863 and that from Wesserling to Kruth on January 2, 1905.

The construction work on the Saint-Maurice – Wesserling railway line was not completed, although a tunnel under the Col de Bussang of 8,287 meters was well advanced and almost all of the engineering structures were built. This route was abandoned in 1935, it would have created a connection between Nancy and Mulhouse .

The route was maintained / operated by different companies:

The line was modernized between 1997 and 2000, and 30 million euros were invested in the renewal of the tracks, platforms and stations, a modern signaling system and the construction of an additional siding in Willer-sur-Thur . Since December 2000, modern diesel multiple units of type X 73500 have been running on the route , sometimes every 20 minutes during rush hour.

Since December 12, 2010, tram-trains have been running in addition to the TER Alsace , which are operated jointly by SNCF and Soléa , Mulhouse's transport company. The tram-trains connect Thann with downtown Mulhouse.

Infrastructure

The line is single-track, originally the Lutterbach – Cernay section was double-track. The profile of the route has gradients of up to 17 per thousand. The route had three short tunnels, the one von Thann was removed during the construction work for the tram-train in 2009. There are no major bridges.

The Lutterbach – Thann-Saint-Jacques section was electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current in July 2009 when the Mulhouse – Vallée de la Thur tram train went into operation in December 2010.

Five private sidings branch off the route:

  • the chemical works in Vieux-Thann , which are still served today
  • the industrial printing company Braun in Vieux-Thann
  • the agrochemical -Werk Corteva (formerly DuPont ) in Cernay , which is not operated more
  • the inking unit Bima 83 , which is also no longer operated
  • the hazardous waste disposal company Stocamine, in the area of the mine Joseph-Else of the Mines de Potasse d'Alsace

Train stations

Wesserling station

The line has 17 stations, all of which are in operation. Wittelsheim has two train stations in its municipality, on the one hand the Graffenwald train station, which opens up the southern part of the commune, and the Wittelsheim train station on the Strasbourg – Basel railway line . Fellering also has two train stations: Fellering and Wesserling train station.

Since the Mulhouse – Vallée de la Thur tram-train went into operation , the municipality of Vieux-Thann has had two stations, the municipality of Thann now has three stations, previously there were two. At the same time, Ranspach train station went into operation, and the community had to wait 147 years for its own train station.
