The Trieste (identification: L 9890) is an amphibious assault ship ( Landing Helicopter Dock - LHD) of the Italian Marina Militare under construction . The single ship , displacing around 33,000 tons, has a 230 meter long continuous flight deck and can be used as an aircraft carrier if necessary . In this role, it will replace the Giuseppe Garibaldi light aircraft carrier in 2022 .

history

The ship is being financed with funds approved by Parliament in 2014 for fleet renewal and economic recovery outside the regular defense budget. Fincantieri and Leonardo received the construction contract with a cost volume of around 1.1 billion euros on July 3, 2015, the first steel cut took place on July 12, 2017, the keel-laying at the Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia near Naples on February 20 2018, the launch (for the last time in the traditional form via an inclined ramp) on May 25, 2019. The further completion and equipment of the ship will take place in La Spezia . It is named after the port city of Trieste , which was annexed to Italy in 1919 as a result of the First World War . Regarding the name, it is also in the successor to the heavy cruiser Trieste of the Trento class, which was commissioned in 1928 .

interpretation

In length and width, the Trieste, at 245 and 36 meters, corresponds exactly to the aircraft carrier Cavour, which displaces 27,000 tons . However, the Trieste has an additional loading and well deck below the hangar deck for amphibious operations, which explains the greater displacement.

Since the Italian Navy does not operate two aircraft carriers at the same time for cost reasons, the Trieste (like the carrier Garibaldi since 2012) will only be used as a kind of aircraft carrier replacement if the Cavour is not available due to downtime in the shipyard or for other reasons . First and foremost, the Trieste is a ship for amphibious operations that are to be carried out via helicopters and landing craft. In addition, it is intended for disaster relief , which is why there is also a hospital on board with operating theaters and various emergency care facilities. The Trieste can as a future flagship of the (amphibious) 3. Fleet Division receive an insert guide bar.

The split superstructures with two islands, which follow the example of the British Queen Elizabeth carrier class , are striking . The front island is home to, among others, the bridge , the rear is particularly intended for the control of air operations. The latter is handled via a flight deck 230 meters long and 36 meters wide, which has nine land spots for helicopters and can accommodate up to 18 aircraft. It is planned to add a ski jump to the runway , whereby one or two of the nine state spots would then be omitted. Two 15 × 15 meter elevators (which in a horizontal position bring the maximum ship width to 47 meters) enable the relocation of aircraft between the flight deck and the hangar deck. The latter is around 2600 square meters and can accommodate up to 14 aircraft. In total, the ship will generally not operate with more than 20 helicopters (including  AW101 , NH90 , AW129 ) and aircraft ( F-35B ).

Below the hangar deck is a 2200 m² vehicle deck with a 55 × 15 meter corrugated deck, over which rigid inflatable boats , LCM landing craft or LCAC hovercraft can be deployed.

The crew, including naval aviators , consists of 460 men and women, and around 600 marines from the San Marco Brigade can be accommodated. The other amphibious capacities of the Italian Navy currently include three dock landing ships of the San Giorgio class , of which the Trieste , apart from the carrier Garibaldi , will replace one. Two new dock landing ships are planned in the medium term. The carrier Cavour is designed to accommodate around 400 marines, but unlike the Trieste, it has no well deck.

Others

The identification L 9890 previously led the landing ship (LST) Grado , which was decommissioned in 1988 , which was replaced by the ships of the San Giorgio class together with the sister ship Caorle (L 9891).
