Tripladenia cunninghamii is the only species of the plant genus Tripladenia withinthe timeless family (Colchicaceae). It is common in Australia .

Tripladenia cunninghamii grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of up to 40 cm. These geophytes form underground, nodular rhizomes as storage organs , which are covered with scale-like stipules . Fiber roots are formed. The above-ground parts of the plant are more or less bare. The upright stems are unbranched.
The alternate and spirally arranged leaves on the stem are sitting. The simple leaf blades are ovoid to ovoid-lanceolate with a length of usually 40 to 70, sometimes up to 90 cm and a width of usually 1 to 2.5 or up to 4.5 cm with a more or less heart-shaped to pointed blade base and pointed upper end. The leaf margin is more or less wavy. There is a parallel vein with several leaf veins.
Inflorescence and flower
The flowering time is at the home locations between October and January. Terminally or laterally in the axils of the uppermost leaves, zymous , one to few-flowered inflorescences are formed on 3 to 6 cm long inflorescence shafts . The bracts are 5 to 8 mm long. The flower stalk is 1 to 3 cm long.
The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry , threefold and have a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 cm. The bracts are folded in in the flower bud. The six identical, free and mauve to pink bracts are 7 to 12 mm long and 4 to 7 mm wide and have a more or less wavy edge. At the base of the bracts there are two nectaries as 2 to 3 mm long appendages . There are two circles with three 5 to 6 mm long stamens each. The free, upright stamens are 2.5 to 3 mm long and broadened at their base. The basifix anthers are 2 to 2.5 mm long and open with slits. Three carpels are fused to form a bare, upper, three- chamber ovary. Each ovary chamber contains numerous ovules in two rows . The stylus is 1 to 2 mm long and ends in three 2 to 3 mm long diverging scars
Fruit and seeds
The wrinkled, loculicidal, triple capsule fruit is egg-shaped with a diameter of 6 to 8 mm and contains many seeds. With a diameter of 4 to 5 mm, the yellow to brown seeds are spherical or, due to the narrowness of the capsule fruit, angular in shape. The fruits ripen in the home locations around March.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2x = 14.
Occurrence
Tripladenia cunninghamii is native to southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. It occurs sporadically, but is locally common in areas with open forests and moist hardwood forests.
Systematics
The genus Tripladenia was established in 1839 with the type species Tripladenia cunninghamii D. Don by David Don in Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London , Volume 1, p. 46. The generic name Tripladenia is derived from the Greek words triplus for triple and aden for a gland; possibly this refers to the broad appendages at the base of the bracts. The specific epithet cunninghamii honors the English botanist Allan Cunningham .
Tripladenia cunninghamii is the only species of the genus Tripladenia from the tribe Tripladenieae within the family Colchicaceae ; it was formerly classified in the families Convallariaceae , Liliaceae or Uvulariaceae .
