The Ternowaner Forest , Slovenian Trnovski gozd (from trn 'thorn and gozd ' forest ', also "thorn forest") or Trnovska planota (highlands), is a mountain range on the south-eastern edge of the Julian Alps or the northern edge of the Karst in southwestern Slovenia . The highest point of the Ternovan Forest is the 1495 m high mountain Mali Golak .

location

The hilly area is about 50 kilometers west of Ljubljana , 35 kilometers northeast of Trieste , east of Gorica (Gorizia, Görz) and north of the Vipava valley near Ajdovščina . With heights of 700–1000 meters, it extends over 35 km to Logatec .

Geology and hydrography

The Ternowaner Forest is located on the southern edge of the Julian Alps and, as part of the Dinaric Mountains, together with the Birnbaumer Forest (Slov. Hrušica ) to the southeast, belongs to the Karst area of the Inner Carniola . Both regions mark part of the edge of the Alps as low mountain ranges in the south of the Alps, traditionally they are also included in the Julian Alps. Geologically, they are steps of the southern Alpine ceiling system that is pushed over to the south . The area is assigned to the Alpine Karst or Hochkarst and is traversed by many cave systems that are among the longest in the world. Here you will find sinkholes up to 100 m deep with vegetation reversal. In the east lies the large Črnovška planota plateau .

The western part of the Ternovan Forest, together with the eastern part, forms the hinterland of the Hubl ( Hubelj ) near Ajdovščina and the Schwarzenberg plateau ( Črni vrh ) , and the northwestern hinterland of the Banschitz ( Banjšice ; Banjška planota) , and southeast of the Birnbaumer Forest ( Hrušica) and Nanos, a hydrogeological unit whose karst water body is determined by Mesozoic Dachstein limestone and limestone breccia . These form highly porous karst aquifers with high hydraulic conductivity. All of them are deep karsts. Almost the entire area is drained in the depths to the Vipava (Wippach) to the south, otherwise superficially to the Soča (Isonzo) to the west and to the Idrijca to the north.

Climate, vegetation and nature conservation

Climatically, the Ternowaner Forest lies on the border between the moderate continental climate and the inland-sub-Mediterranean climate of the Wippach Valley. The area is one of the wettest regions in Slovenia (up to over 2000 mm).

The vegetation of the sparsely populated region is part of the forestry used Dinaric fir-beech forest .

The Ternovan Forest together with the Nanos form the Natura 2000 area Trnovski gozd - Nanos , in the northeast, on the upper reaches of the Idrijca, lies the Zgornja Idrijca Nature Park (Krajinski park Zgornja Idrijca) . The southern flank of the Vipava valley is the Južni obronki Trnovskega gozda landscape park . The forest reserve Smrečje v Trnovskem gozdu - mrazišče lies north of the Prapod in the interior of the plateau .

History, Economy and Transport

After the Counts of Gorizia died out, the region came to the Habsburg Empire as part of Carniola in 1335 and remained part of Inner Austria for all inheritance divisions .

Until modern times, an important line of business was the production of charcoal . On the high Karst accumulations occur ice in pit caves, which in the past by mining was mined and exported. The most famous is the 385 m deep and 1550 m long Great Ice Cave in Paradana , whose ice was exported to Egypt .
