The line-up with Viola Davis was announced in February 2018. Jim Gaffigan and Allison Janney followed in April 2018 . Mckenna Grace stars 9 year old Christmas Flint. After the film I, Tonya from 2017, in which Janney and Grace played mother and daughter, this is the second joint film project between the two actresses. Mike Epps joined the cast in May 2018, Ashley Brooke and Milan Ray in June 2018 .

The score was composed by Rob Lord . The soundtrack album, which comprises a total of 14 pieces of music, was released for download from Lakeshore Records in March 2020.

The film service describes Troop Zero as a coming-of-age film carried by likeable characters that pleads for the courage to be different from the mainstream and sings a song of praise for friendship. Visually and through the choice of music, a quirky, nostalgic evocation of the 1970s, the film with the focus on female characters also strikes emancipatory tones , which are about resistance to the restrictive, conservative images of women of the era.
