The Tschaja ( Russian Ча́я ) is a 194 km long left tributary of the Ob in the West Siberian lowlands in Russia .

course

The Tschaja arises in the village of Ust-Baktschar at an altitude of 67  m from the source rivers Parbig (length 320 km) from the left and Baktschar (348 km; Tschaja with Baktschar 542 km) from the right, which have their origins in the marshes of the Wassjuganje in the southern central part of the West Siberian lowlands have.

The Tschaja flows through the flat taiga landscape to the left of the Ob, on the territory of the Tschainsk Rajon of Tomsk Oblast , initially meandering strongly in northeastern to northern directions. It reaches the territory of the Kolpashevo Rajon and the Ob floodplain and divides into two arms. The right arm Njarga joins the Ob after a good 8 km at the settlement of Ust-Njarga. The left arm flows for another 25 km as the crow flies in a north-westerly direction on the western edge of the Ob floodplain, before it finally flows into the Ob at the village of Ust-Tschaja 15 km below (west) the city of Kolpashevo at 54  m altitude.

The most important tributaries of the Chaya are the Iksa from the right and the Nyursa and Toja from the left.

Hydrography

The catchment area of the Tschaja covers 27,200 km². In the lower reaches the river reaches a width of over 100 m at a depth of 2 m; the flow velocity is 0.6 m / s.

The river freezes between November and April, followed by floods that last until early July. The water flow of the Tschaja 136 km above the mouth is an annual average of 75.9 m³ / s with a minimum of 21.1 m³ / s in March and a maximum of 348 m³ / s in May.

Infrastructure

The river is navigable along its entire length from its source at Ust-Baktschar; However, only 172 km are inland waterways, as shipping traffic is carried over the short right-hand Njarga estuary into the Ob, while the lower or left-hand estuary is not regularly navigated.

Along the entire course of the river there are mainly villages on the right bank, which are grouped together to form the municipalities of Ust-Baktschar, Podgornoje, Tschainsk (in Tschainsk Rajon) and Tschaschemto (in Kolpaschewo Rajon). Ust-Tschaja at the river mouth is part of the nearby Novogornoje. At Tschaschemto two road bridges cross the river along the regional road R398 from Tomsk to Kolpashevo. A paved road branches off there, connecting all the villages along the right bank of the river.
