Tunica is the county seat of Tunica County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Mississippi . The city is not far from the east bank of the Mississippi River .

After the city used to be almost exclusively agricultural, today it is mainly casinos , which attract visitors from all over the southeastern United States, the main source of income for the city.

The city is the fourth administrative seat of Tunica County, after this first in Commerce (1839-1832 and 1842-1847), Payton (several months in 1842) and Austin (1847-1888).

Tunica lies at 34 ° 41'20 "north latitude and 90 ° 22'50" west longitude. The city extends over 1.8 km², which consists exclusively of land.

The city is located around 9 km east of the Mississippi in the northwest of the state of the same name. Through the village leading US Highway 61 , the south of the city about 50 km to Clarksdale without any curve slope or gradient runs.

There is a small airfield on Highway 61 in the south of the city. A new regional airport was opened east of the city in 2003 to cope with the growing number of visitors from the casinos since the 1990s .

In the 2000 census, the population was 1,132. These were distributed to 537 households in 254 families. The population density was 615.6 / km². There were 592 buildings, which corresponds to a density of 321.9 / km².

The population in 2000 was 67.84% white , 29.42% African American , 1.06% Asian , 0.27% American Indian, and 0.88% other. 0.53% said they came from at least two of these groups. 2.30% of the population was Hispanic people belonging to any of the above groups.

18.9% were under 18 years of age, 6.1% between 18 and 24, 23.4% between 25 and 44, 28.3% between 45 and 64 and 23.3% 65 and older. The average age was 46 years. Statistically, there were 87.7 men for every 100 women, 80.0 for those over 18 years of age.

The median income per household was $ 26,607 and the median family income was $ 54,583. The average income for men was $ 30,208 and that of women was $ 22,250. The per capita income was $ 20,114. Around 17.1% of families and 25.5% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
