action

Jack Andrus was once a Hollywood star. As his fame faded, he became addicted to alcohol. His marriage failed. After a serious car accident and nervous breakdown, he spent three years in a New England sanatorium . Finally, he receives an offer for a small role in a costume film by Maurice Kruger. Kruger was once the director who gave Jack his great career. The shooting takes place in Rome's film studio Cinecittà . Maurice Kruger, too, has already had his prime as a director. In Italy he would like to refresh his career again.

In Rome, Jack meets his divorced wife Carlotta and learns that his role has already been taken. The whole production is in big trouble and Jack is supposed to oversee the dubbing of the film. Jack feels like a loser again and consoles himself with the pretty Italian Veronica. However, Veronica is in love with the film's lead actor, Davie Drew. One night director Kruger has a heart attack and is hospitalized. Jack promises Kruger's wife Clara that he will finish the production for his former mentor. He throws himself into work with success, taking care of Veronica and Davie in a fatherly manner. When Kruger learns that Jack's work has gone well, he attacks him and accuses him of wanting to steal his film. Jack then leaves the production and returns to his ex-wife Carlotta. The night ends in a drunkenness and a wild car ride. Finally, Jack realizes that he is responsible for his own life. He says goodbye to Veronica and Davie and flies to Hollywood.
