James Gregory (born December 23, 1911 in New York , † September 16, 2002 in Sedona ) was an American actor .

life and career

Gregory was born in the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle . In high school he was elected head of the drama group. With the goal of becoming a stockbroker, he began working as an errand boy on Wall Street . James Gregory continued to play the theater on the side, performing in New York, New Jersey and Maryland until he made acting his profession in 1935. He made his Broadway debut in Key Largo in 1939 . Around two dozen other Broadway productions followed over the next 16 years, interrupted by World War II when he served in the Army for three years. On May 25, 1944, he married the singer Anne Miltner (1917-2005), with whom he was married until his death.

At the beginning of the 1950s, Gregory shifted his acting from the stage to the new mass medium of television. He kicked u. a. in episodes of the series Alfred Hitchcock shows , Twilight Zone and The Untouchables . In 1962, his role as "Senator Iselin" in the film Ambassador of Fear with Frank Sinatra made him better known. After Captain Newman at the side of Gregory Peck and The Four Sons of Katie Elder with John Wayne and Dean Martin , three films followed in the Matt Helm series, also with Dean Martin. However, his appearances in television series continued to be significantly more numerous, in the 1960s James Gregory played several times in The People of the Shiloh Ranch , A Thousand Miles of Dust , Bonanza , Big Valley and The Chef as well as others. a. in A Cage Full of Heroes , On the Run , Spaceship Enterprise , Smoking Colts , High Chaparral and Hawaii Five-Zero .
