United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (German " Interim Security Force of the United Nations for Abyei", UNISFA ) is a peacekeeping mission for the Abyei area, which is disputed between Sudan and South Sudan . The emergency services are almost exclusively provided by Ethiopia and currently number more than 4,500 to ensure that Abyei remains a demilitarized zone . The UN Security Council authorized the mission with Resolution 1990 of June 27, 2011.
On July 27, 2011 it was announced that 500 soldiers were now stationed. On August 2, 2011, four UNISFA soldiers were killed in a land mine explosion .
The mission strength on January 31, 2015 was 4,393 soldiers, 122 military observers and 18 police officers , as well as 126 foreign and 78 local employees and 32 United Nations volunteers.
Most recently, the mission was extended to November 15, 2017.
