The United States Central Command ( CENTCOM ; German Central Command of the United States ) is one of eleven Unified Combatant Commands of the US armed forces . It is currently commanded by General Kenneth F. McKenzie (USMC) ; Deputy Commander is Lieutenant General Thomas W. Bergeson (USAF).

The CENTCOM was set up in 1983 and placed under the operational control of the US Secretary of Defense .

CENTCOM is the responsible regional command for the Middle East , East Africa and Central Asia . The command was responsible for deploying and coordinating the US military and US-led coalition forces during numerous operations, including Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom .

The subordinate troops are currently deployed primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan and have bases in Kuwait , Bahrain , Qatar , the United Arab Emirates , Oman , Pakistan , Djibouti (Camp Le Monier) and several countries in Central Asia. In addition, troops were active in Jordan , Israel and Saudi Arabia in the past , but without having any significant bases in these countries.
