Ugni is a plant species from the family of myrtle (Myrtaceae), which comprises about four types. The scientific name is derived from Uñi , the Mapuche name for Ugni molinae .

description

They are evergreen, small trees or bushes, often of a heather-like shape (erikoid). The small, oval to lanceolate, dark green, cross- opposed leaves are 1 to 4 cm long and 0.2 to 2.5 cm wide.

The single flowers are usually five-fold, sometimes four-fold. The petals are white to pale purple. The stamens are numerous (20 to 40) with short stamens . The lower ovary is three-chambered. The fruits are more or less spherical berries that contain a large number of seeds .

distribution

All species of this genus are native to western South and Central America , from southern Mexico to the Valdivian rainforest of southern Chile .

Systematics

The species of this genus was often classified in either Eugenia or Myrtus earlier . The main distinguishing features are the drooping flowers and stamens, which are shorter than the petals. There are four types:
