subjects

The mechanical watch and the world of micromechanical timekeeping is the subject of the magazine. It describes its editorial focus as “round-the-clock purchase advice”. The goal and claim of the editorial team is to be at the reader's side as a friend and advisor when choosing a mechanical timepiece. In addition to technical and historical backgrounds, reports from Swiss, German and Japanese manufacturers as well as on the craft and industrial production of mechanical timepieces are published on a regular basis . The editorial team regularly organizes reader trips to renowned watch manufacturers . The destinations of the trips were the Saxon glassworks , the Swiss Vallée de Joux as well as Geneva and Munich .

The reports from the watch magazine are also published in the international watch magazines of Ebner Verlag ( Watchtime in the USA, Mexico, India and an edition for the Middle East (Dubai), as well as under the name Chronos in China, Poland, Japan and South Korea) published in the respective national languages.

Test reports and focus

In addition to comparative tests, market overviews are regularly prepared. The focus is on diving watches and pilot watch tests every two years . According to the publisher, both comparative tests run under realistic conditions. For example, diving watches are evaluated during underwater operations, supplemented by a control of the gait behavior and laboratory tests with artificially generated water pressure. Diving watches with mechanical depth gauges , for example, are tested in a decompression chamber at the Accident Clinic of Murnau , the pilot's watches in Tannkosh by aerobatic pilots. The gait behavior is performed before, shortly after and 14 days after the aerobatics, during which the watches have to withstand loads of up to 8 g . Since 2012, the watch magazine has been involved in the advisory board in the development of the technical standard for pilot's watches (TeStaF) by the Aachen University of Applied Sciences .

The watch price guide has been published shortly after the watch fair in Geneva and Baselworld since 1998 . It shows over 1,000 models from more than 200 watch brands and provides technical information on function and movement. The watches are divided into ten price ranges from under 500 to over 30,000 euros. This price guide, which has over 250 pages, has been published regularly for the iPhone and iPad since 2009 .

Golden balance

Every year since 1998, watch magazine readers vote for the best watches in the world when they vote for the Golden Balance . Since 2005, this has been done in cooperation with the Munich news magazine Focus . In the last election in 2014, a total of over 30,000 participants voted.

Watchstars

Between 2014 and 2017, the watch magazine organized a global watch competition called Watchstars . The Watchstars are an international award for the best watches of the year. The task of the competition is to draw international public attention to the cultural asset of the mechanical wristwatch and to save historical craftsmanship from being forgotten. An exclusive international jury made up of specialist journalists and watch specialists has the right to propose candidates, as well as their later choice from a shortlist. The jury is organized according to the sponsorship principle. This means that a new entry is only possible upon application by at least two jury members, the entry is made with a simple majority. The first publication of the election results is scheduled for the beginning of November. Watchstars Executive is the watch magazine editor-in-chief, the jury is chaired by the Munich watch journalist Gisbert L. Brunner.
