The golden balance is one of the most famous German-language awards for new watch models and is awarded annually on the last Thursday in February.

History and election mode

The award goes back to a first reader vote in the magazine Uhren-Magazin in 1990. In 1998 it took place for the first time under the name Goldene Unruh. The election has been held annually since 2000. In 2001 the election was supplemented by online voting in cooperation with Focus -online . Since 2005, coordination has been carried out in complementary cooperation with the news magazine Focus . The preselection appears in the November issue of the watch magazine. From these candidates nominated by the watch manufacturers, the readers use consecutively numbered voting cards to choose the most popular watches in the five price categories. Since 2014, this preselection has also been accompanied online by watchtime . The ten best models for each category are shortlisted . From December to January, registered users vote among these nominees in a vote on Focus online for the “best watches in the world” (slogan of choice). Since 2007, the watch magazine editorial team has also been awarding a maximum of three technology prizes. In 2013 there was a change of mode: the gold medal technology was awarded to a single candidate for outstanding achievements in watch design. Both the medal and the trophy are specially made by the clock manufacturer Erwin Sattler . In the election for XX. Golden Unruh voted a total of 15 269 participants on the 310 submitted candidates.
