Ulf Eysel

Ulf Theodor Eysel (born November 3, 1944 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ) is a German neuro and sensory physiologist .

Career and area of ​​work

After graduating from the Kassel Wilhelmschule in 1964 , Eysel did his military service in the armed forces . 1965 began as a Fellow of the studienstiftung at the Free University of Berlin , a medical school from which he graduated 1,971th On November 26, 1971, he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . His doctoral supervisor was Otto-Joachim Grüsser . Eysel received his license to practice medicine on May 2, 1972. Then Eysel received a research and habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG), which enabled him to do his habilitation in physiology at the Free University of Berlin in 1975 . In 1976 he followed a call as C3 professor for physiology at the University Hospital Essen. In 1987 Eysel moved to the Ruhr University in Bochum, where he was given the chair for neurophysiology. He was visiting professor at the University of Chicago , University College London , and the Universities of Melbourne and Osaka .

Ulf Eysel's field of work is essentially the visual system . His research focuses on the structure and function, neuropharmacology and plasticity of the visual system. Together with several colleagues he founded a DFG research group in 1990 and in 1996 the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) Neuronal Mechanisms of Vision - Neurovision . Eysel was spokesman for the SFB until the end of 2007. Currently (August 2011) Eysel is a sub-project manager in the SFB 874 Integration and Representation of Sensory Processes . Since 2010, Eysel has headed the Experimental Neurophysiology Department of the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum . In 2013 he retired.

Eysel is married and has two children. He is the chairman of the USC Bochum Association .

Memberships and honors

Eysel is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and has been an elected member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2008 . He was President of the Neuroscientific Society , as well as Dean and Research Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University in Bochum. Since December 2010 he has been Vice Rector for Research and Structure . Eysel is a member of the supervisory board of Forschungszentrum Jülich .

In 1994 Eysel received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize . In 1986 he and Franz Grehn received the International Chibret Award .
