Ulf Riebesell
Ulf Riebesell (born October 15, 1959 in Stade ) is a German marine biologist , oceanologist and university professor .
Scientific career
Ulf Riebesell completed his basic studies in biology from 1981 to 1983 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . Between 1983 and 1986 he was a graduate student for three years at the Institute for Oceanography (IfM), Kiel and then two more at the School of Oceanography, University of Washington , Seattle , USA . He completed his master's degree , which he began in 1986, at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island , Narragansett , USA. He was then a PhD student atAlfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven and received his doctorate in 1991 at the University of Bremen . He continued his postdoc time from 1991 to 1992 at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and from 1992 to 1994 at the Marine Science Institute, University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), USA. From 1994 to 2003 he was employed again in various positions at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. Until 1995 as a research assistant, from 1995 to 2003 as a research assistant and from 1997 to 2003 as head of the department of biology and the interdisciplinary research group carbon.
Since 2003 Ulf Riebesell has been Professor of Biological Oceanography at IFM-GEOMAR , today GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel . Between 2004 and 2007 he was chairman of the scientific council, since 2007 he has been head of the research unit biological oceanography and between 2009 and 2011 he was deputy head of the research area marine biogeochemistry.
Since 2006 he has been coordinator of area A "Oceans in a Greenhouse World" of the Cluster of Excellence Ocean of the Future .
In 2010 he headed a European Arctic - Expedition to investigate the ocean acidification .
Ulf Riebesell coordinates the German research association for ocean acidification , BIOACID (Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification) and the field experiments with the "KOSMOS mesocosms" , which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research .
