Ulrich Schmidt (politician)

Ulrich Schmidt (born March 31, 1942 in Witten ; † July 29, 2021 ) was a German politician . From 1975 to 2005 he was a member of the SPD in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1995 to 2005 President of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia.

After finishing elementary school , Ulrich Schmidt first went to a commercial vocational school and began an apprenticeship at Hoesch AG , which he completed with the industrial clerk examination in 1959. He then worked as a commercial clerk. As part of a professional development, he passed an administrative examination in social security . Initially, he worked as a specialist , most recently as a group leader and consultant for fundamental issues at the company health insurance company Hoesch .

In 1964 Ulrich Schmidt joined the SPD. From 1965 to 1967 he was chairman of the Young Socialists ( Jusos ) in Volmarstein. In 1969 he took over the chairmanship of the local SPD association in Wetter-Volmarstein . From 1970 he was also active on the SPD's city council in Wetter (Ruhr) . In 1980 he was elected deputy sub-district chairman of the SPD in Ennepe-Ruhr-Witten.

In local politics, he first became active in 1970 as a member of the City Council of Wetter. From 1970 to 1975 he was chairman of the local culture and sports committee. From 1975 to 1995 he was mayor of the city of Wetter .

Ulrich Schmidt was from 1960 a member of the metal industry union and from 1968 a member of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) , from 1978 to June 1995 as district chairman of the AWO Ennepe-Ruhr .

Ulrich Schmidt was elected to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia for the first time on May 28, 1975. From May 31, 1990 to May 31, 1995 he was the second vice-president of the state parliament. From July 1, 1995 to June 8, 2005 he was president there. In 2005 he left the state parliament.

Ulrich Schmidt was married.
