Volmarstein is a district of Wetter (Ruhr) in the Ennepe-Ruhr district , North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). Until 1969, the place south of the Ruhr was an independent municipality in the Volmarstein district .
geography
The district includes the two districts 1347 Grundschöttel (7.99 km²) and 1349 Volmarstein (3.07 km²) with a total area of around 11.06 km². Volmarstein is located in the southeast of the city of Wetter and is surrounded by the Herdecke district , the Wetter district ( Alt-Wetter district ), the Vorhalle and Westerbauer districts of Hagen , the Gevelsberg districts of Berge and Silschede and the Wetteraner districts of Esborn - starting from the north and Wengern .
The lowest point in the district is about 81 m above sea level. NN height ( mean water level ) the Ruhr in the very north of the Volmarstein district. The highest point is in the area Am Südhang ( 266 m above sea level ) in the Grundschöttel district on the border with Silschede.
history
Volmarstein is mentioned in the Werden monastery files as early as 1047 . The name of the place has developed over the centuries; What was meant was the height on the Volme . The place received the liberty rights in 1342 and since the 15th century had a vistem court under the counts of the Mark .
The village of Volmarstein and the castle were destroyed by a large fire in 1754. Only rubble remained of the castle. The residents used the stones of the castle to rebuild their houses.

On January 19, 1939, Grundschöttel was incorporated.
With the municipal territorial reform, the Ennepe-Ruhr district was restructured on January 1, 1970. The municipality of Volmarstein, located south of the Ruhr, came to the city of Wetter. Furthermore, were Esborn and Wengern incorporated that the District Volmarstein had heard.
In 1997 the community celebrated its 950th anniversary.
Attractions
The ruins of the Volmarstein Castle in the In der Bach / Am Vorberg conservation area are the most famous sights of the place. The castle was built in 1100 and destroyed by the Count von der Mark in 1324.
On the way up to the castle ruins there are two war memorials ( names based on the texts on the memorial plaques ):
- Memorial to the dead in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71
- Memorial to the victims from 1939 to 1945
The Protestant village church of Volmarstein is also an old building . Experts date the establishment in the 11th century. The last restoration took place from 1995 to 1996. Near the village church, which is Hillige Born (Holy source ) a kind of "source Monument", which is integrated into a wall. It has the inscriptions De Hillige Born ANNO 780 and Donated by Carl Winzerling in Volmarstein 1913 .
On the village square in the center there is an unusual monument with three oversized padlocks . The following is explained on a board: June 1997 - 950 years of Volmarstein - donated by ABUS - FW Lüling - Burg Wächter . It is a reminder of the outstanding importance that the lock industry in Volmarstein had and still has today. The three founders are important companies in this sector and have their headquarters in Volmarstein.
The Hensberg conservation area west of the Volmarstein village center is a forest area used primarily for local recreation.
Economy and Infrastructure
The company Aug. Klönne from Dortmund ran a fireclay factory for his company . Several important companies are located in Volmarstein. The companies ABUS , Burg-Wächter and Burg have their headquarters in the Am Nielande industrial area directly at the Volmarstein motorway exit. The three companies manufacture locking systems and security technology and are among the largest employers in the Wetter urban area.
The Evangelical Foundation Volmarstein (ESV) includes institutions and societies in acute medical care and rehabilitation, outpatient, partially and fully inpatient care for the disabled and the elderly as well as vocational and school rehabilitation. The foundation is 100 percent shareholder of RZV data center Volmarstein GmbH, a SAP - system house for institutions in the healthcare industry as well as the elderly and disabled assistance. Around 3,500 people are employed in the foundation's facilities and companies.

Transportation
In Volmarstein there is a train station on the Ruhr Valley Railway , but it is closed to passenger traffic. By bus lines 553, 555, 584 and 591, which run through Volmarstein, can be reached in a northerly direction, weather reason Schöttel, weather center with the train station , in a southwesterly direction Hagen-Westerbauer (553, 555) and Haßlinghausen , (584) as well as in the southeast direction Hagen-Vorhalle and Hagen -Zentrum (591). These bus routes are operated by the Ennepe-Ruhr transport company .

In Volmarstein there are two Evangelical Free Churches and a closed Brethren Congregation of the Christian Assembly as well as a Catholic Church ( St. Augustine and Monika , belonging to the Diocese of Essen ) in addition to the Evangelical Church Community of Volmarstein .
As a so-called institutional church congregation, the Martinskirchengemeinde looks after the rehabilitants, patients, residents and students of the Evangelical Foundation Volmarstein , an institution in the network of Diakonie.
