Ulrich Thöne

Ulrich Thöne (born October 1951 in Paderborn ) is a German trade unionist. From 2005 to 2013 he was Federal Chairman of the Education and Science Union (GEW).

Life

Thöne was born in Paderborn and grew up in Lichtenau (Westphalia) , where he graduated from high school in 1971 . After training as a bank clerk at Deutsche Bank , he studied economics and social sciences as well as pedagogy for teaching at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . After completing his legal clerkship in Berlin, in 1986 he took up a position as a vocational school teacher at the Upper School Health Center in Berlin-Wedding . His union career began in 1971 in the trade union for trade, banks and insurance companies (HBV), from which he switched to GEW in 1982 via ÖTV . He was chairman of the district youth committee in the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) and a member of the district executive.

From 1989 he was deputy chairman of the staff council for teachers and educators in Wedding and from 1995 deputy chairman of the staff council for vocational schools. At the same time he worked for the GEW Berlin as spokesman for the AG Education Financing and as a representative in the main committee of the GEW. From 1999 to 2005 he was chairman of the GEW Berlin. In 2005 he was elected chairman of the GEW and held this office until 2013. From 2007 he was also chairman of the international teachers' union Education International . In 2013, for reasons of age, he no longer stood for election as GEW chairman. The successor in this office was Marlis Tepe .
