Confluence of the Una and Unac in Martin Brod

The Una (outdated also Unna , Serbian - Cyrillic Уна ) is a right tributary of the Save in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina . It rises near Donja Suvaja in Croatia on the border with Bosnia and flows into the Sava at Jasenovac . The Una is 212 kilometers long from the source ( 520  m. In the year ) to the confluence with the Save ( 94  m. In the year ).

The river forms the historical and present-day border between Bosnia and Croatia over long stretches. Important tributaries are the Unac , which flows into the Una at Martin Brod , and the Sana , which flows into it at Novi Grad . Larger towns on the Una are Bihać , Bosanska Krupa , Novi Grad and Kozarska Dubica .

The Una flows through kilometers of gorges between Bihać and Bosanska Krupa; Above Bihać there are numerous rapids and waterfalls in the Una National Park . The highest of them is the Štrbački Buk southwest of Ripač .

The river Una is very rich in fish with 28 different species. There are also numerous other animals such as otters, mussels, crayfish, turtles and some species of birds.

A peculiarity that only exists in this form in the Una are limestone formations, called Sedra . These are caused by the high lime content of the water and form real cascades . The Una is popular for canoeing and rafting tours .

Hydrology

With an average discharge rate (MQ) of 202 m³ / s at the mouth, the Una ranks fourth among the major rivers in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the Save, Neretva and Drina . Its catchment area has an area of ​​9368 km² and is mostly in Bosnia and the smaller part in Croatia.
