history

First efforts

The earliest attempts to establish a university in Guadalajara were made in the late 17th century. On July 12, 1696, the friar Felipe Galindo Chávez y Pineda applied to King Charles II to raise the Real Seminario Conciliar de San José to the rank of university. It was not until 1750 that Matías Angel de la Mota Padilla made the next effort in this direction, who declared the establishment of a university to be the top priority of the city administration. But it wasn't until 1767, when the Jesuits were banned in Latin America and the education system largely collapsed, that concrete plans became necessary.

founding

On December 12, 1775, the local bishop Antonio Alcalde y Barriga responded to a request from King Charles III. to assess the need to found a university, and finally received the royal mandate to found it in 1791.

1821 to 1924

With the Iguala plan in 1821, the rector Diego Aranda y Carpinteiro swore the university's independence from the Spanish crown. Since then, the university has been state. Until 1924, the university was repeatedly affected by the political turmoil of the young republic and was even closed for a time.

1925 until today

In 1925, then Prime Minister Jose Guadalupe Zuno Hernandez brought young intellectuals to the university to give the UdeG a new profile. Since then, the university has enjoyed increasing international recognition.
