Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that there was no method of manipulating the audience that would leave out this "shameless, mindless punk". A bad melodramatic television series is more intelligent. The characters would say the stupidest things ("people in this movie say some of the dumbest things"). Christian Slater is "terribly miscast" and most of the time he acts so stiffly as if he had already died. Marisa Tomei could not speak her lines of dialogue seriously or credibly. There is no chemistry between the main actors.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 12, 1993 that the “unabashed” love story moved on a thin line between a fable and the real world in which the characters would live. It works because it has a heart in the right place. Tomei appears engaging and warm-hearted; Slater project a mysterious sound.

Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post on February 12, 1993 that the fairy tale was hopelessly absurd, lame, and corny. The shy and mysterious character played by Christian Slater fits the actor very well ("extremely well"). The balance between the “magic of fairy tales” and the “horror of real life” was only partially successful.

Matthew Tobey wrote in the All Movie Guide that a decade after his film Six Weeks (1982) the director was “exploring” again the topics of romance, sentimentality and dying at a young age.

Awards

  • Christian Slater as actor and Slater and Marisa Tomei for a kissing scene received the MTV Movie Awards in 1993 .
  • Christian Slater received the MTV Movie Awards for Most Desirable Actor in 1993 .
