The Weichhaarige sulfur basket ( Urospermum dalechampii ) is one of two plant species of the genus sulfur basket ( Urospermum ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Urospermum dalechampii grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 20 to 40 centimeters.

The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette and alternate, the topmost opposite, on the stem. The leaf blade of the basal leaves is saw- shaped . The stem leaves are entire or toothed.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to August. On a long, strong and thickened inflorescence shaft there is a single cup-shaped inflorescence with a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The seven to eight lanceolate bracts arranged in a row are fused at their base and soft-haired.

The flower head contains sulfur-yellow ray florets together. The marginal ray florets are also often reddish brown on the outside.

The long, beaked achenes have a feathery, slightly reddish brown pappus .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The distribution area of Urospermum dalechampii covers the north-western Mediterranean area to the Balkan Peninsula . Urospermum dalechampii occurs in Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia , Libya , Spain , the Balearic Islands , Monaco , France , Corsica , Italy , Sardinia , Sicily , Malta , Croatia , Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro .

It usually thrives on roadsides as well as on cultivated and wasteland .

Taxonomy

The first publication took place in 1753 under the name ( Basionym ) Tragopogon dalechampii by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum , 2, page 790. The new combination to Urospermum dalechampii (L.) Scop. ex FWSchmidt by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli was published in 1795 in Franz Willibald Schmidt in Collection of physical-economic essays ... 1, page 276. Other synonyms for Urospermum dalechampii (L.) Scop. ex FWSchmidt are: Arnopogon dalechampii Willd. , Tragopogon bicolor Moench , Tragopogon laetus Salisb. , Tragopogon verticillatus Lam. , Tragopogonodes dalechampii (L.) Kuntze , Urospermum grandiflorum St. Lager .
