The starting point for Ursula Kreutz's artistic work is on the one hand intensive, interdisciplinary and experimental research into the possibilities of the medium of photography and on the other hand the overarching theme of memory as a questioning of perception, the world and reality. During her studies in Nuremberg, she first developed an original process with the work "Memory Boxes" from 1998, which still characterizes her art today: On the basis of computer-designed, photo-printed transparent fabrics with a slight moiré effect and calculated blurring cause, she designs picture boxes through to installations and entire rooms in the room. The transparency of the material and the duplication of the motifs result in cross-fades that are transformed into a multi-layered projection surface. By changing the viewer's point of view, several images are created at the same time, so that the appearance and disappearance of the image motif encourage discussion of existential questions.

Quotes from and about Ursula Kreutz

  • For me photography has the quality of fixing the moment. I am interested in doubling and multiplying this two-dimensional level and thus creating a multi-dimensional, self-describing space. Ursula Kreutz
  • The intimacy of Ursula Kreutz's sculptures is due to a sharp visual intelligence and the unironic brokenness of the place. Where is memory located? What space does memory occupy? - Who can tell? It is less important for the artist to answer this question than it is perhaps for us. It is more about translating the question into a visual medium.

Thomas Eller ; Artist, former editor-in-chief of artnet , 2006

  • The constant appearance and disappearance of the images is funny in a dialectical way, as if Ursula Kreutz wanted to parody Hegel's aesthetics through the visual execution. Namely, that defines art as an appearance that always has to make something disappear.

Kurt Jauslin, Erlanger Nachrichten 2006
