The circle (artist group)
The circle is the oldest still existing association of visual artists of the post-war period in Franconia .
history
The circle was founded on July 3, 1947 at the suggestion of Leo Smigay in Nuremberg . The first board of the circle consisted of Georg Weidenbacher , Theodor Hugo Fenners and Alois Maier-Lengeling . According to the founding protocol, the purpose of the group is “to cultivate contemporary art and to create exhibition opportunities outside of its own rooms, in Nuremberg and other places.” The number of members is limited to 30 artists according to the statutes.
The group does not have a common artistic concept, but serves to support the members with external presentations, press work and the organization of exhibitions. Since it was founded, Der Kreis has shown itself in over 80 shows in Nuremberg and other Bavarian cities, but also in Dortmund , Berlin and Cellepino (Italy).
The group wanted to address a large audience with actions in public space , for example with the actions Kreis im Fluß (1987) with a series of works of art in the Pegnitz or ten to two thousand (1990) on the Nuremberg main market .
In 1978 the circle was a founding member of the Nuremberg Artists' House - Friends of Franconian Art Association . In the Kunsthaus Nürnberg there are regular exhibitions of the members of the circle.
For the 50th anniversary, the exhibition Der Kreis 1947–1997 took place in the Kunsthalle Nürnberg . Longstanding members such as Hans Karl Busch or Oskar Koller took the anniversary as an occasion and left the circle to make room for younger members.
Since March 1, 2000, the circle has exhibited works of art by members and artist friends in its own gallery, the KREIS gallery , at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum .
For the 70th anniversary of the artist group, the special exhibition A longitudinal section through art in Nuremberg since 1947 and in the Kunsthaus In den Raum was shown in the KunstKulturQuartier Nuremberg under the motto “The Circle” .
