Urvantsevit is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system with the chemical composition Pd (Bi, Pb) 2 and forms irregularly shaped, polymineral, up to 4 mm large adhesions of gray-white color.

Etymology and history

The mineral was discovered in 1976 by NS Rudaschewski, WN Makarow, EM Mededewa, WW Ballakh, JI Permjakow, GA Mitenkow, AM Karpenkow, IA Budko, and NN Schischkin, in its type locality , the Mayak mine near Norilsk in Russia . It is named after Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Urwanzew (1893–1985), who was one of the discoverers of the ore deposits of Norilsk.

classification

In the Strunz system , Urvantsevit is one of the sulfides and sulfosalts. According to the 8th edition , together with Borishanskiit and Froodit , it forms a group of sulfides with a ratio of metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium of <1: 1. In the 9th edition , it forms its own subgroup of sulfides with a ratio of metal to sulfur of 1: 2 and iron , cobalt , nickel or platinum metals .

In Dana’s systematics , it forms with Froodit and Verbeekit a subgroup of sulfides, selenides and tellurides with the composition A m B n X p , with (m + n): p = 1: 2.

Education and Locations

Urvantsevit is formed in sulfidic copper-nickel ores. It is associated with Froodit, Sobolevskit , Paolovite , Cabriit , silver , Hibbingit , Altait , Galenit , Pentlandit , Cubanit and Chalcopyrite .

Only a few locations are known of the very rare mineral. In addition to its type locality, Urvantsevit has so far only been found in Abberode in the Harz ( Germany ).

Crystal structure

Urvantsevit crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system in the space group I / 4mmm with the lattice parameters a = 3.3628  Å and c = 12.902 Å, as well as two formula units per unit cell .
