International matches of the Barbadian national football team

The Usain Bolt Sports Complex is a sports complex named after the Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt on the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados . The complex, located near the sea, has a FIFA -certified artificial turf field (class 2) as well as a floodlight system that corresponds to class 3 (for national and non-televised games) according to FIFA guidelines. There is also an IAAF- certified athletics facility, biomechanical laboratories, training rooms and two fitness centers.

history

Already Owen Arthur , Barbadian Prime Minister from 1994 to 2008, assured the Vice Chancellor (vice-chancellor) of the University of the West Indies and historian Hilary Beckles that the sports complex would be financed by the Barbadian government. After a few years of planning and preparation, the actual construction phase began in the 2010s. This was carried out in three construction phases. In the first construction phase, the soccer field and the running track (Ryan Brathwaite Track) , named after the barbadian Ryan Brathwaite , were built. The athletics facility has two 100-meter lanes, two sand-oriented sections for the shot put and two sections with sand pits for long jump and triple jump . The second phase saw the construction of the eastern grandstand, after the Barbadians Obadele Thompson was named (Obadele Thompson stand) , before. In addition to 550 seats, this also has toilet facilities, the changing rooms for the guest teams (divided into men's and women's changing rooms) and various other rooms such as storage rooms. The third construction phase one took the opposite western grandstand, after the Grenader Kirani James was named (Kirani James version) , in attack. This has 400 seats and houses the fitness facilities as well as a so-called high performance center and the sports department of the University of the West Indies.

The sports complex opened in 2015, with Usain Bolt personally announced at the opening ceremony. The naming of the sports complex was heavily criticized by the local population, because the facility was named after a Jamaican athlete and not after a Barbadian athlete. Rector Beckles defended the naming, however, and said that it did not exclude the achievements of the Barbadians, but was only used to celebrate all people of the West Indies . He also added that the university is not exclusively Barbadian, but stands for the entire West Indies, and a debate about Barbadians, Jamaicans or Trinidadian should not even begin.

The first international football match took place here on May 10, 2015 against St. Kitts and Nevis ; the friendly international match ended in a 1: 3 defeat for the home side. On June 14, 2015, the second-round qualifying second leg for the 2018 World Cup between Barbados and Aruba took place here; the game ended in a 1-0 Barbados win but was subsequently penalized. Because of the use of the yellow- banned Hadan Holligan by Barbados, CONCACAF then scored the second leg 3-0 for Aruba. As part of the qualification for the Caribbean Championship 2017 , the international match between Barbados and Curaçao took place here on March 24, 2016 . The last international match of a men's national soccer team so far (as of January 2018) was played on March 27, 2017 in a friendly encounter between Barbados and Martinique and ended with a 2-1 victory for the Barbadian men.

In addition to club and national teams, school teams also appear here. Of course, it serves primarily as the sports facility of the UWI Blackbirds , the sports department of the University of the West Indies, and as the home of the UWI Blackbirds FC , the university’s men's soccer team, which has its game operations in the Barbados Premier League and was Barbadian for the first time in the 2016 season Became soccer champion.
