The Utah Lake ( German Utahsee ) is the largest freshwater lake in the US state of Utah .
It is located south of Salt Lake City in the northeastern part of the Great Basin and has a water surface of 392 km². It flows over the Jordan River into the Great Salt Lake .
Located at the foot of the Wasatch range , the lake is around 39 km long, up to 18 km wide and, with a maximum depth of a little more than four meters, not very deep. Water is brought to it from the mountains via many small streams , while in the north it drains into the Great Salt Lake. Seasonally, large algal blooms form on the lake , which in the past mixed with industrial inflows of a now defunct steelworks on the eastern shore of the lake.
The shoreline between the lake and the mountain range is densely populated as the Provo - Orem metropolitan region and a population center in Utah, which is otherwise characterized by its desert character.
In particular, the swampy areas on the southern tip of the lake and the area at the mouth of the Provo River serve as resting places for many migratory birds such as pelicans , geese and herons in spring and the late autumn months . The endemic Utah bullhead ( Cottus echinatus ), which died out in 1930, lived only in the lake .
Since 1970 Utah Lake has been designated as a state park under the name Utah Lake State Park . It is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and anglers . In the winter months the lake freezes over temporarily and allows winter sports such as ice skating .
