Uwe Steffen was born on June 12, 1928 on the island of Sylt . He comes from an old family of whalers and pastors. You can still find the magnificently designed tombstone of his ancestor Matthias Petersen on the island of Föhr . His father Richard Steffen and his grandfather were already provosts.

As a fourteen and fifteen year old he was trained to be a seaman on a sailing training ship. He had already signed up for twelve years as an active naval officer in the Navy when the collapse of the Third Reich thwarted his plans. Steffen, versatile and interested, passed his Abitur in Neumünster in 1949 , studied theology in Kiel and Göttingen , received his practical training in Neumünster and Preetz , married in 1954 and took over his first pastor in Lütjensee in 1955 . Over time, he and his wife Hille had three children.

Steffen has been active as a journalist since 1959. He devoted himself to extensive radio and television work. Numerous articles by Steffen have appeared in various magazines.

From 1966 to 1975 he was provost of the Norderdithmarschen provost in Heide (Holstein) .

From 1976 until his retirement in 1993 he was provost in Ratzeburg Cathedral .

The then Ratzeburg cathedral organist Neithard Bethke described Steffen in his foreword to the publication of the book Mitteilungen vonfahren in 1993 as being able to verbally capture the essentials concisely and emphasized his extraordinary productivity as a writer . He had expressed himself on questions of everyday life, pastoral care, daily politics, church and theological problems with often only short but accurately formulated stories, reflections and sermons and based on apparently everyday occurrences, speeches picked up or how newly found ancient knowledge people in thought led to the recognition of the relation of all things to one origin - God . One of Steffen's favorite biblical characters was the prophet Jona , whose depiction also adorns his tombstone.
