The Val Chisone ( Occitan Val Cluson ) is a high alpine valley in the Piedmontese part of the Cottian Alps in the metropolitan city of Turin near the border with France. The valley is one of the Occitan valleys of Piedmont.
The valley is named after the river Chisone (Cluson in Occitan) and extends for about 70 km from the Sestriere Pass to the Po Valley near the town of Pinerolo , 30 km southwest of Turin . After another 10 km in the plains, the Chisone flows into the Pellice at Garzigliana, and this soon afterwards into the Po .
Larger places in the valley (from the Pellice upstream) are Osasco , Pinerolo, San Germano Chisone , Villar Perosa , Pinasca , Perosa Argentina and in the upper reaches Roure , Fenestrelle / Usseaux , Pragelato and Sauze di Cesana . At Perosa the side valley Valle Germanasca branches off to the southwest . Neighboring valleys are the Val di Susa in the north and the Val Pellice in the south.
history
The so-called Waldensian valleys Pellice, Chisone and Germanasca were retreat areas for the Waldensians from the Middle Ages to the 19th century . The centuries-long military importance of the Val Chisone can be seen in the fortresses of Pinerolo and Fenestrelle as well as in the well-maintained military roads that run at over 2000 m on the ridge between the Chisone and Susa valleys.
