Val Ferret (Italy)

The Val Ferret is an alpine valley in the Italian region of Aosta Valley , northeast of Courmayeur . It should not be confused with the neighboring valley of the same name in the north- east of Switzerland, from which it is separated by the Col du Ferret.

The Italian Val Ferret borders the eastern Mont Blanc group to the south. It is overlooked by the Italian-French border ridge with Aiguille de Triolet , Aiguille de Talèfre , Aiguille de Leschaux , Grandes Jorasses , Dent du Géant (from east to west) by up to 2500 meters. To the south ( orographic left), gentler, partly wooded slopes rise. The upper end of the valley is south of Mont Dolent below the Col du Ferret ( 2490 m ), over which the border between Italy and Switzerland runs. The lower end of the valley is about 12 kilometers southwest at Entrèves ( 1360 m ), two kilometers north of Courmayeur. However, south-west of Entrèves, the valley continues as Val Vény and ends after around 13 kilometers at Col de la Seigne ( 2490 m ).
The Val Ferret is drained by the Dora di Ferret or Doire de Ferret brook , which originates from the Glacier de Pré de Bar and is fed by other glaciers on the southern slopes of the Mont-Blanc group. In Entrèvesa the combined Dora di Ferret with the Dora di Vény (or Doire de Vény ) from the Val Vény to Dora Baltea , a direct tributary of the Po .
The Val Ferret can be driven by car over a length of about 10 kilometers to Arnuva ( 1769 m ). The main town of the valley is Planpincieux and is about three kilometers from Entrèves. Another village is Lavachey, which is about 3.5 kilometers up the valley from Planpincieux.
At the upper end of the valley is on the main Alpine ridge of the Col Ferret with the Petit Col Ferret ( 2486 m ) and the Grand Col Ferret ( 2536 m ), separated by the Tête de Ferret ( 2713 m ). Beyond the Col Ferret extends the Swiss Val Ferret , which lies on the east side of the eastern Montblanc massif and drains north to the Rhone.

The Tour du Mont-Blanc, a popular long-distance hiking trail, also leads through the valley.
