Valborg is a North Rhine-Westphalian Death Doom and Experimental Metal band from Bonn , which was founded in 2002.

history

The band was formed in 2002, after which the self-financed debut album Songs for a Year was released in 2005 . The band continued to work on new material, but since the members were involved in other projects, appearances were not possible. In 2009 the second album Glorification of Pain followed , which was followed by three more albums from 2010 to 2012 with Crown of Sorrow , Barbarian and Nekrodepression . During this time, the group was also active live, including performing at the Roadburn Festival in 2010 . In 2015 the album Romantik was released . For the release of the album, Valborg gave a concert in Münster , where Total Negation and The Moth also presented their respective new albums. In 2016 a collaboration with Bloodway was published, before the next album followed in 2017 under the name Endstrand . In the same year the band again took part in the Roadburn Festival. The next album, Zentrum, followed in 2019 . In March of that year, four performances were held together with Mantar in Germany. For December 2020 the group is confirmed for the Eindhoven Metal Meeting .

style

James Christopher Monger from Allmusic described the music as a mixture of Death , Doom and Progressive Metal , which evokes memories of Triptykon , Celtic Frost and Throes of Dawn .

Björn Thorsten Jaschinski from Rock Hard wrote in his review of Glorification of Pain that there is a dark and occult atmosphere on it, similar to The Devil's Blood . The group is moving away from "tricky structures, towards an often monotonous, bass-heavy flow", with sections without distortion , so that the music as a whole can be assigned more to rock than metal . While listening to the album he noticed, among other things, similarities to Katatonia in the middle creative phase, occasional restrained clear vocals, “ghostly recitative ”, monk choirs and slight sonic parallels to Black Metal . In addition, he attested the album an "originality in minimalist expression". In a later issue, Boris reviewed Kaiser Barbarian and found that it cannot be classified as Doom, Death or Black Metal. Instead, you play a kind of “We-find-everything- Tom-Warrior- makes-super-metal”. Characteristic for the album are the “very heavy, very dark, very reduced sound”, which reminds one of Celtic Frost and especially Triptykon. This applies to "the guitars, the vocals, the hardness of the production, even the capricious in the expression". Repetitions and "a kind of riff - autism " are also characteristic of the songs . Simon Dümpelmann stated in his review of Romantik that the band did not repeat themselves stylistically on albums. While the group on Necrodepression still played music in the style of Celtic Frost, Killing Joke and Eisenvater , it is now a “doomier, epic, downright meditative album that flows from one piece with a stronger keyboard presence, a sacred touch and musically almost already a minimalist approach, where the accents mainly happen in the vocal area ”. Wolfgang Liu Kuhn stated that Endstrand "both lyrically and musically are so disturbing and negative that they would drive Florian Silbereisen into suicide". Compared to its predecessor, the group marches “more straightforward”, with influences from Crowbar , Celtic Frost and Death Moon . The aggressive singing is also characteristic. In the interview with Christian Kolf listed below, he stated that the band had tried to go straight to work in order to create a kind of spirited, choleric and liberating cosmic doom- punk . Musically and philosophically one feels most likely to be with Type O Negative . While listening to Zentrum , Sebastian Schilling noticed that the band sounds independent “without using gimmicks that are alien to the style”. “ Cryptic German texts” would be shouted while a stoic beat was played on the drums . The group also incorporated influences from post-punk . The songs have an anarchist and avant-garde character and are as melancholy as music by Lifelover . In an interview with Meredith Schmiedeskamp in the same issue, Jan Buckard revealed that his text was heavily influenced by science fiction authors such as Arthur C. Clarke and Stanisław Lem . Musically, they orientated themselves to the New German Hardship , although Valborg was more threatening and intrusive.

Melanie Aschenbrenner from Metal Hammer also reviewed the center and described the music as hard and raw, with little focus on melodies. Musically, they sometimes move more towards Doom and other times more towards Death Metal. There are often similarities to Triptykon on the album. In addition, one can compare the music with that of Mantar, "only without the rock'n'roll - swagger ". The texts are expressionistic and occasionally Dadaic and are performed in varied vocal styles.
