Vampire Knight ( Japanese ヴ ァ ン パ イ ア騎士ナ イ ト, Vampaia Naito ) is a commercially successful manga series by the Japanese illustrator Matsuri Hino . It is aimed primarily at young girls, so it can be assigned to the Shōjo genre.

action

Both humans and vampires are taught at the Cross Academy . People learn during the day and are referred to as Day Class . However, they do not know that in the Night Class , when it is already dark, the vampires are taught. The mostly female students are also in love with the beautiful vampires, which makes it difficult for Yuki Cross to stop the vampires from drinking the girls' blood. She is only human herself, but was attacked by a vampire at the age of six and saved by Kaname Kuran, a pure-blood vampire. As a pureblood vampire, he belongs to the vampiric nobility and looks down on Level E - Vampires (vampires who used to be humans and who are no longer under control). He takes Yuki to the headmaster of the school, who adopts her.

Four years later, Zero Kiryu is also included. He is the son of a vampire hunter family whose members, with the exception of Zero and his twin brother Ichiru, were killed by the vampire Shizuka Hio. Zero himself is obsessed with taking revenge on this vampire. Yuki and Zero are the school's “guardians” who make sure that no one from the Day Class learns about the secret of the Night Class. The unsuspecting girls of the Day Class sneak out at night to see the elite students. Because this is considered dangerous, the two Guardians and Prefects of the Academy prevent any close contact between the Day Class and Night Class students.

But although Zero harbors a strong grudge against vampires, he finds that he is slowly transformed into a vampire by a bite from Shizuka. His thirst for blood increases so much that Yuki becomes his first victim. However, only she, the director and Kaname notice this. Yuki, who has developed a close friendship with Zero, decides to let Zero suck her blood because he cannot tolerate the blood tablets that the other vampires have invented and use as a substitute. However, Zero does not transform into a vampire like Kaname; instead, since he was originally a human, he threatens to become a Level E vampire.

To prevent this transformation, he must drink the blood of a pure-blood. But that poses some problems. In the course of the plot a big conflict arises between Zero and Kaname, at the end of which Kaname offers his blood in order to bribe Zero. As a result, Zero lives on as a Level D vampire.

One of Kaname's relatives, the vampire Rido, is resurrected and his soul is transplanted into Senri Shiki's body. The risen Rido wants to kill Kaname and kidnap Yuki. It turns out that Kaname and Yuki are siblings and that Yuki was largely born to become Kaname's wife. Kaname was one of the first purebloods and rested in a coffin. Since Rido had woken him up and thus became his master, Kaname cannot kill him and of course needs Zero to do so. For her own protection, she was changed into human by her mother with all her might, and the mother died. Her father died fighting Rido, who loved Yuki's mother and took her first son - -. Yuki suffers greatly from her memory loss, which Kaname brought about for her "protection", and is on the verge of death. The only way to save her is by turning her back into a vampire and breaking her mother's magical seal. Kaname investigates this possibility and she regains her memory. Zero sees the two of them as vampires and wants to kill them, but Yuki stops him with great persuasiveness.

Zero, strengthened by the blood of the two purebloods, is captured and classified as dangerous. His brother comes up and tells him that Zero should suck him up. Despite strong objections from Zeros, he is ultimately forced to kill his brother, which gives him so much strength that he can kill Rido. Then Zero and Yuki face each other. She holds the altered Artemis, a staff for defense, in her hand, he points his pistol at her and she expresses with the last words that she does not want to die yet. Zero doesn't have the heart to shoot Yuki as he remembers the time when Yuki was still human and his best friend. In the next chapter Kaname appears, who attacks Zero because he has committed the betrayal after all. Kaname loses his hand in the fight. Before anything worse can happen, Yuki intervenes and Kaname leaves the field to give them a moment to say goodbye. Zero pulls Yuki into his arms and asks her if she is free from her worries, which she says yes. She also says that she only desires Kaname's blood, whereupon Zero reveals that he only desires hers and makes her bite him to realize that she is finally a vampire. When she has drunk his blood, whereupon he finally reveals his feelings to her, he tells her that he will kill her at the next meeting and she then says she would run away from him forever so that he has a reason to live. At this point they part ways.

Yuki soon realizes in tears what Zero has really felt for her and tells herself that she is the wrong person because she is a vampire. Yuki has to decide whether she wants to stay with Zero or go with Kaname. It is with a heavy heart that she decides to go to Kaname. When she wants to leave the Cross Academy with Kaname, she sees Zero outside again, carrying the dead Ichiru out of the dungeon. Their glances meet briefly, but then Zero turns away bitterly, but Yuki looks at him longer. She then lives with Kaname.

Characters

Cosplayers as characters from Vampire Knight

Day class

  • Yuki Cross ( 黒 主 優 姫 , Kurosu Yūki ): She is the adopted daughter of the school principal and, like Zero, a "guardian" of the school. As a weapon, she uses the Artemis, a sword that she received from her adoptive father for her own protection. She has a very good relationship with Zero and is as in love with him as with Kaname, who previously saved her life and is actually her big brother. Yuki doesn't know anything about it, however, because her mother took away her memories a long time ago and according to her, the encounter with Kaname is "the beginning of her life". After Kaname and Yuki left Cross Academy together, she also realizes that Zero has a place in her heart.
  • Zero Kiryū ( 錐 生 零 , Kiryū Zero ): He has been friends with Yuki since childhood and the loss of his family. His hatred of vampires allows him to do his job as a guardian conscientiously. As a weapon he uses a pistol, the Bloody Rose , whose ammunition is only lethal for vampires. Since joining the Cross family, he has developed deep feelings for Yuki, but he doesn't feel good enough as a future Level E vampire and keeps pushing her towards Kaname. In the course of the series, Yuki becomes Zero's enemy.
  • Sayori Wakaba ( 若 葉 沙 頼 , Wakaba Sayori ): Yuki's roommate and best friend. Yori later learns that Yuki is a vampire, but keeps it to herself. She is one of the few day class students who is not interested in the night class, as she, also called Yori-chan by Yuki, is a little afraid of the night class. Sayori is always concerned about Yuki.
  • Ichiru Kiryū ( 錐 生 壱 縷 , Kiryū Ichiru ): Zero's younger twin brother. He suffered from a chronic illness. He and Zero were very close in childhood, but when Ichiru found out that his parents preferred Zero, he began to despise him and he slowly became indifferent to his parents. He betrayed his and Zero's parents to Shizuka. In contrast to Zero, Ichiru did not become a vampire because Shizuka did not bite him but even let him drink her blood to cure his chronic illness. Later he even wanted to kill Zero.

Night Class

  • Kaname Kuran ( 玖 蘭 枢 , Kuran Kaname ): He is the head of the Night Class and a pure-blood vampire. To protect Yuki from Shizuka, he killed Shizuka, which is forbidden according to the code and blamed Zero for the murder. At the time when Zero drank Yuki's blood, he was both jealous and angry, because Yuki was his sister and he was in love with her. However, he was able to restrain himself because he only thought about the well-being of his beloved Yuki. Kaname has become a very closed person since his and Yuki's parents were murdered by Rido. Only when he is around Yuki does he lose this closeness. However, he is not the real son of Haruka and Juri Kuran, the brother of Haruka and Juri kidnapped the birth son as a baby and brought him as a sacrifice to Kaname, "the ancestor of the Kuran clan", which reanimated him.
  • Takuma Ichijō ( 一条 拓 麻 , Ichijō Takuma ): The vice head of the Night Class. He is a “noble blood” vampire whose powers are almost as strong as Kanames, whom he is very close to and whom he also respects. He was hired by his grandfather to bring Senri Shiki (whose body was captured by his father Rido Kuran) back to the Cross Academy. Takuma had no intention of taking him to Cross Academy since Rido Kuran is Kanames and Yuki's uncle and the killer of Kaname's father. He stops an argument between himself and Kaname so that Senri's body is not injured by Kaname. He also saves Rima Toya's life at the last second before she can be killed by Rido Kuran when she orders Rido to leave Senri's body. At the end of the anime, it's not clear whether Takuma survived. In the manga, however, you finally learn that he stayed with the pureblood Sara Shirabuki.
  • Senri Shiki ( 支 葵 千里 , Shiki Senri ): One of the youngest of the Night Class. He and Rima are models. He also hunts level E vampires that are spiraling out of control. His weapon is a whip made from his blood. His father is Rido Kuran, Kaname's uncle, which means that he is Kanames and Yuki's cousin. Senri's body was taken over by his father (actually his soul) even though he is dead. Although it's not particularly clear in the anime, the manga says that he and Rima are a couple. He has a good relationship with Ichijō.
  • Rima Toya ( 遠 矢 莉 磨 , Tōya Rima ): She works as a model just like Senri Shiki. She often uses electricity.
  • Hanabusa Aido ( 藍 堂 英 , Aidō Hanabusa ): Is, like all the nightclass, a swarm of girls and loves and enjoys its popularity to the fullest. He's also very easy to persuade. Many call him idol (Japanese for star, the beginning of the word is identical in pronunciation to his first name). His weapon is the ice. In addition, despite his arrogance, he seems to be worried about the overall situation and investigates himself, although Akatsuki tried to stop him. He loves the smell of Yuki's blood. When Yuki becomes a vampire and receives special treatment because of her pureblood status, Aido cannot get used to it at first. But later he begins to understand Yuki and helps her by z. B. leaves the door "accidentally". He has blue eyes and blond tousled hair.
  • Akatsuki Kain ( 架 院 暁 , Kain Akatsuki ): Is the cousin of Aido and tries to stay in the background, although his family is very famous. He takes his job as a student in the Night Class very seriously and doesn't understand why Kaname is so attached to Yúki and even calls her his lover. His admirers also call him Wild-sama because of his somewhat wild-looking hairstyle. Its element is fire. He has to take care of Aido all the time so that he doesn't do nonsense. Akatsuki is in love with Ruka, but does not return his love because she is in love with Kaname herself.
  • Ruka / Luca Souen : Is in love with Kaname, but he does not return her love. She is sometimes a little temperamental, but often shows a friendly, soft side, especially towards Kaname. Your gift is to manipulate others through hallucinations. Even if she doesn't particularly like Yuki, she protects her because she wants to take care of what is important to Kaname. She is also good friends with Akatsuki, who is in love with her.
  • Maria Kurenai : Is a distant relative of Shizuka Hio and attends the Cross Academy after Shizuka has taken over her body. Maria's character is difficult to assess. She looks childish and is quite lively in the company of others, but sometimes she is rather silent and serious. Maria has always suffered from her ailing, weak body and hoped for help from her relative Shizuka Hio, who is a pureblood. Shizuka consented on the condition that Maria lend her her body to heal her. When Kaname kills Shizuka, however, Maria has to keep her frail body and live with it. Her gift is flying.

Other characters

  • Kaien Cross ( Kurosu Kaien ): He is the headmaster of the school and has a funny and at the same time serious character. Yuki was adopted by him when he was 6 years old and Zero was adopted 4 years later. Kaien wants to ensure that vampires and humans can live together in harmony, but he used to be a very successful vampire hunter and is known as the "legendary vampire hunter".
  • Shizuka Hiō ( 緋 桜 閑 , Hiō Shizuka ): Her lover, a vampire who was previously human, was killed by the Kiryu vampire hunter family, which is why they wiped out the entire family except Zero and Ichiru. Zero wanted to kill her, but she died when Kaname protected Yuki from her. She had bitten Zero and being a pureblood, Zero also became a vampire.
  • Rido Kuran ( 玖 蘭 李 土 , Kuran Rido ): Senri's father and Kanames and Yuki's uncle. He is actually dead, but can take control from other bodies. His eyes have different eye colors, which is how he can be recognized in other people's bodies. He is also the killer of Kanames and Yuki's father. He doesn't care about people, he just uses them as a meal. But the blood of Kaname and Yuki's mother strengthened him. Now he intended to drink Yuki's blood as well.
  • Toga Yagari * He is number one among the vampire hunters. He used to be Zeros and Ichirus Master. His right eye was destroyed by a Level-E vampire. He is an ethics teacher at the Cross Academy.
  • Sara Shirabuki * A pureblood like Kaname. Doesn't appear in the anime, but does appear in the manga.
  • Juri Kuran * mother of Yuki and Kaname. She is a pureblood Kuran and sister of Haruka (to whom she is married) and Rido Kuran. She died from the trick she used to make Yuki a normal person for a period of time with no memory of her previous life.
  • Haruka Kuran * father of Yuki and Kaname. He is also a pureblood Kuran and brother of Juri (married) and Rido Kuran. He was killed by Rido when he tried to get at Yuki's blood.
