history

The house was built by Frederick Van Cortlandt (1699–1749) for his family in 1748. Van Courtland died before completion, and the property passed to his son James Van Cortlandt (1727–1787).

The Van Courtlandt family of merchants, prominent in New York City, built a grain plantation and mill on the property. During the Revolutionary War it was used by Rochambeau , Lafayette and George Washington and served at times as the headquarters of the Continental Army . The Van Courtlandt family lived there for 140 years until the property was sold to the New York City Council in 1889 and converted into a public park. Van Courtlandt House was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 24, 1967 and a National Historic Landmark on December 24, 1976 . The house has been a museum since 1897 (the oldest museum in New York City and the fourth oldest in the United States).

architecture

The Georgian L-shaped house has two and a half floors and a hipped roof . It was built with field stones . It is considered to be one of the finest examples of high Georgian stone architecture in the United States. The house stands on 192 acres (78 hectares).
