Vanilla appendiculata is a species of vanilla ( Vanilla ) in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). The climbing plant is found in the Amazon basin.

description

Vanilla appendiculata is an evergreen climber with a slightly fleshy shoot that is round in cross section. The leaves are described as oblong oval to lanceolate or spatulate, at the front they end with a short, attached, slightly rounded tip. The length of the leaves is 8 to 15 centimeters, the width 2.5 to 6 centimeters, the petiole is only 1 centimeter short.

The inflorescence is thick and short, it becomes 2.5 to 4 centimeters long and has around 12 flowers . The bracts of the flowers are roughly elongated, ending bluntly, 0.4 to 0.8 inches long. The curved ovary is 4 inches long. The petals are - except for the lip  - narrowly lanceolate and 3 to 5 centimeters long. The inner petals are slightly narrower than the outer, slightly concave in shape and keeled on the outside. The lip becomes 5 centimeters long, it is elongated and indistinctly three-lobed. While the side lobes are blunt and rounded, the middle lobe is longer, it ends pointed and is curved far down. There are thread-like appendages on the middle lobe, further towards the base of the lip the appendages are wider. The column will be 3.7 centimeters long. The fruit is not curved and is 10 to 12 centimeters long, it smells aromatic.

distribution

Vanilla appendiculata has been found from Guiana to northern Peru. Perhaps it is widespread across the Amazon basin. The type specimen was collected at Corantijn .

Systematics and botanical history

This orchid was described by Robert Allen Rolfe (1855–1921) in 1895 . In his first description he reports that the fruits collected in 1879 still smelled when he examined it.

Within the genus Vanilla , Vanilla appendiculata is classified in the sub-genus Xanata and there in the section Xanata , which only contains species of the Neotropics . Related species are the spice vanilla ( Vanilla planifolia ) and Vanilla bahiana , Vanilla cristagalli , Vanilla denticulata , Vanilla dubia , Vanilla dungsii , Vanilla fimbriata , Vanilla helleri , Vanilla insignis , Vanilla odorata , vanilla phaeantha , Vanilla ribeiroi , Vanilla schwackeana and Vanilla uncinata .

A synonym is Vanilla purusara Barb.Rodr. ex Hoehne .
