Varallo ( Piedmontese Varal ) is an Italian commune with 7,101 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Vercelli (VC), Piedmont region and is the holder of the Bandiera Arancione of the TCI . To distinguish the municipality from Varallo ( NO ), the place is also called Varallo Sesia because of its location on the Sesia River .

On January 1, 2018, the municipality of Sabbia was incorporated.

The place is in the Valsesia at an altitude of 450 m above sea level. The municipality covers an area of ​​88 km² .

The municipality consists of the districts Crevola, Roccapietra, Morca, Balangera, Parone, Morondo, Varallo Sesia, Cortaccio, Erbareti , Grattera, Canepale, Massera, Molindelina and Salaro.

The neighboring communities are Borgosesia , Cellio con Breia , Cesara , Civiasco , Cravagliana , Madonna del Sasso , Nonio , Quarna Sotto , Quarona , Valstrona , Varallo Sesia and Vocca .

Culture and sights

The landmark of Varallo and at the same time a famous place of pilgrimage is the holy mountain Sacro Monte di Varallo (603 m), which is supposed to commemorate the holy places ( Bethlehem , Calvary , Nazareth etc.) of Palestine . It is a major tourist attraction and a major contributor to the local economy.

In July there is a regional fair, the Alpaà , in Varallo, where the companies and municipalities of Valsesia present themselves. In this context, a large fair is also held.
