Vartan Kechichian

Vartan Kechichian CAM (born September 13, 1933 in Kasab , Syria ; † November 22, 2017 in Lido di Venezia , Italy ) was a Syrian clergyman of the Armenian Catholic Church . He was Abbot General of the Mechitarists (1997–2000) and Coadjutor Ordinary of Eastern Europe (2001–2005).

Life

Vartan Kechichian joined the Congregation of Mechitarists in Venice at and put on 15 August 1956, the profession from. From 1953 to 1959 he studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and was ordained a priest on September 8, 1959 . He was a pastor on San Lazzaro degli Armeni , a small island in the Venice lagoon . He then carried out various tasks in the Mechitarist Congregation and was rector of the Minor Seminary in Beirut, rector of the religious studies in Rome, director of the religious colleges in Venice, Paris and Buenos Aires, vice-rector of the minor seminaries in Aleppo and S. Lazzaro. He was general economist of his congregation and from 1997 to 2000 also Abbot General of the Mechitarists.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Mardin degli Armeni and Coadjutor Ordinary in Eastern Europe on February 17, 2001 . The Patriarch of Cilicia , Nerses Bedros XIX. , donated his episcopal ordination on May 13th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Jean Teyrouz ICPB , Curia Bishop in Cilicia , and Vartan Achkarian CAM, Curia Bishop in Cilicia and Auxiliary Bishop in Beirut .

On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation. He then lived on Lido di Venezia, where he died in November 2017 in the San Camillo hospital.
