Vauville

Vauville is a village and a former French commune with 319 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Manche department in the Normandy region . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of La Hague . The inhabitants call themselves Vauvillais .

With effect from January 1, 2017, the previous municipality of Vauville was merged with the other 18 municipalities of the former Communauté de communes de la Hague to form a Commune nouvelle called La Hague and has the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Beaumont-Hague.

Vauville is on the northwest coast of the Cotentin Peninsula , in the La Hague countryside . Adjacent parishes were Beaumont-Hague , Sainte-Croix-Hague and Biville .

A dune massif extends from Siouville-Hague to Vauville .

A geological and archaeological educational trail was created. The Le Petit Beaumont fossil site is also partially located in Vauville.

Toponymy

Vauville is derived from the Germanic name Waldo (or Valr , if the name is Scandinavian), followed by the French ending -ville .

  • Camp Maneyrol, a glider airfield established in 1923. Here Alexis Maneyrol broke the world record in gliding (8 hours 4 minutes 50 seconds) on January 29, 1923.
  • Benedictine priory of Saint-Michel. The 15th century chapel has been added to the list of historical monuments .
  • The castle of Vauville and its botanical garden. Only the keep of the castle built in 1163 has been preserved. The current castle consists of two parts from the 17th century, which are perpendicular to each other and adjoin the old keep. The castle is owned by Guillaume Pellerin, whose father designed the botanical garden. There you can visit the largest palm garden in Northern Europe. In 1972 the castle was added to the list of historical monuments, and in 1992 the garden too.
  • Saint-Martin church (nave from the 12th century) houses a bas- relief from the 15th century (L'Éducation à la Vierge), which has been added to the list of historical objects.
  • The Vauviller pond (national nature reserve).
  • Allée couverte of Vauville is an approximately 4500 year old megalithic complex . In 1907, the stones, also called Pierres Pouquelées, were added to the list of historical monuments.
  • Fort de Vauville is a fortified house from the 18th century and is located west of Vauville directly on the beach. It served as the backdrop for the film Stranded in 2013 .

Personalities

  • Thomas Hélye (approx. 1180–1257), beatified Catholic priest, died in Vauville. The body was transferred to Biville, his birthplace.
  • Edmond-Marie Poullain (1878–1951), French watercolourist, painter and engraver.
